Alphonse LaRiviere Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 16 to Mar. 17, 2009.
LARIVIERE, Alphonse Joseph On March 14, 2009, Mr. Alphonse Joseph LaRiviere passed away peacefully at the age 87 years. Left to fondly remember Al's kind nature, quick wit and gentle personality are his loving wife, Victoria (nee Hnatyk); five children, Ronald (Lynn), Linda (Randy) McConnell, Lorna (Reg) Royer; Wayne (Nives), and Allan (Dawna); twelve grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Laura, Mike, Dean, Lindsey, Janelle, Renee, Elyse, Andre, Justine, Taylor, and Andrew; and five great-grandchildren, Josh, Xavier, Damon, Rebecca, and Jeremy. Alphonse was the last surviving member of nine brothers and sisters. Alphonse was born in St. Pierre, Manitoba on April 21, 1921. He grew up on the family farm in LaBroquerie, Manitoba where he attended school. After serving in WWII, he married Victoria Hnatyk on April 29, 1953. In 1954, they moved to Edmonton and in 1956 he started his long-term employment with the City of Edmonton Telephones, from which he retired in 1985. Al will be remembered for strong work ethic, his love of the outdoors (hunting, fishing, camping), and his skillful interest in playing cards with family and friends. In retirement, Al enjoyed wood carving, socializing with friends, and golfing. In addition, Al was active in the community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a volunteer with Scouts Canada. A Prayer Service in Celebration of Mr. Al's, Big Al's, Dad's, and Grandpa's Life will be held on Tuesday, March 17 at 8:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 - 111 Avenue. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 13131 - 86 Street. Cremation will follow in the Park Memorial Crematorium.
