Alphonsus Hui Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Nov. 26 to Nov. 27, 2015.
Alphonsus Zan Lam Hui - Dr Alphonsus Hui passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, November 14, 2015, in Vancouver at the age of 68. A much-loved son, brother, husband, and father, he is survived by his wife of close to 42 years Josephine, daughter Monique and son Creighton, father Sek-Kwong, and siblings Warren, Stella, Christina, Hilary, and Anna along with in-laws, nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his mother Van Si (2000) and brother André (1999). Born in Guangdong, China, April 20, 1947, at age 3 his family moved to Hong Kong where he attended Wah Yan College through till high school graduation. In 1966, he immigrated to Canada to pursue his medical degree first at Loyola College (Montréal) graduating from University of Toronto Medical School. After interning at Vancouver's VGH, followed by his first year of practice in Powassan, Ontario, he ultimately earned his CCFP certification (Canadian College of Family Physicians) and, in July 1977, settled his young family in Vancouver where he founded his Oakridge practice. Alphonsus was many things: loving father and husband; loyal friend; humble man of faith; dedicated family physician. He was gentle, supportive, and generous. He enjoyed many talents: choral singing, ballroom dancing, fishing, skiing, windsurfing, playing ping-pong and tennis. A tireless volunteer and fundraiser for many community organizations, he spearheaded the "New Life Stem Cell Society" which educated the public on stem cell matching in battling blood disorders aiming to increase registration amongst ethnic minorities, redressing cultural reluctance to donate, specifically in Chinese-Canadians. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 28, 2015, 11am at Holy Name Parish, 4925 Cambie Street, Vancouver; Fr. Frank Landry celebrant. Future inurnment will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, to contribute to his lasting memorial please visit www.Alphonsus.ca.

My name is Edmond Chu. I only know Alphonse´s for a very short time in 1965 to 1966 in New method College. He was very friendly and one time he invited me to his home to teach me how to dance,I danced one time with his younger sister. This experience I have always remembered and treasured. That lead me to look him up and unfortunately I discovered this. I am happy that he had a great career and a great family. I wish I could have talk to him . I am practicing medicine in Anaheim California.

I am a past student of Wah Yan College Hong Kong. When I was in school running our school newspaper, The Starlet, as a Chief Editor back in 1986, I was doing research on the history of the Starlet and realised that Dr. Hui was the first Chairman of The Starlet who founded the school newspaper in 1965 when he was in Form 5. Unfortunately there is no record found of how our first school newspaper looked like. Recently Wah Yan College has celebrated its 100th birthday and I have started to research on our school history again. From the past school magazines, I finally found a few Dr. Hui’s photos and records when he was in school. Thanks to the internet, when I searched his name online, I found this page. It is a great loss of his passing away. I wish I had a chance to talk to him and thank him in person for his contribution to The Starlet and the school. After so many years The Starlet still continues its mission in school. A big salute to our first Chairman! Dr Hui will be missed.

I have only just heard the sad news of Dr Hui's passing

I was fortunate to have "inherited" Dr Hui as my family doctor when he took over Dr Lewchucks practice on West Broadway, and followed him when he moved to Oakridge

He was a man without ego, kind, and caring. It never bothered me if I was kept waiting for an appointment, because I knew that if he was late, it was only because he was giving another patient the extra time that he had often given to me. He listened, and was not dismissive

I will never forget going in for surgery-I was very scared, and just before I was going under the anaesthetic I opened my eyes, and there he was-I clutched onto his arm, and that was the last thing I remembered before waking up in recovery. That was twenty years ago-it meant the world to me that he was there

Dr Hui was a lovely man, and I feel as though I have lost a dear friend

My heart goes out to his wife, family, friends, colleagues, and patients -my sincere condolences

Dear Mrs. Hui,

My 102-year old mother, Stella, was a patient of your husband's. She has been housebound for many years. Your husband was such a kind, dedicated and compassionate physician, he came several times to my mother's house to visit her. He had just come by on Nov. 11th to see her. When I spoke with him and said that was a holiday, he told me that was a good day for him to come because he was only doing paperwork and not seeing patients. As both my sister and I don't live in Vancouver, over the years we have called your husband at his office to deal with our mother's health issues long distance. He always tooke our calls and was always so patient with us.

We are still in disbelief that he is gone! He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family.

My sister, Jacqueline Davreux Gregory, joins me in sending our sincere condolences to you and your family.
