Althea Francis Marbury Fletcher

FLETCHER Althea Francis Marbury Fletcher, age 89, passed away January 25, 2011 at her home in Bridgeport. She was born to the late Elijah Jefferson Marbury, Sr. and Willie Roberta (McCarroll) Marbury on June 13, 1921 in Talladega, Ala. After graduating high school, Althea went to study at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. During her time at the school, she was crowned the first Miss Johnson C. Smith. In 1943, she graduated with a degree in teaching. On July 19, 1943, Althea married Lloyd M. Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He later retired as an Air Force Major. While in the Air Force, the Fletchers were lucky to be stationed in other countries. They lived in Turkey and Germany for a bit, and were also able to travel all over Europe. During the winter months, the Fletchers enjoyed relocating to Puerto Rico and Hawaii for the warmer weather. Mrs. Fletcher was a dedicated member at Covenant Church of Easton. Althea left to cherish her memories, her husband of 67 years, Lloyd M. Fletcher; daughter, Linda Fletcher (Ditrell Packer); two granddaughters, Nicole Brown and Tomishia Brown; four great-grandchildren, Mylan, Paris, Paige, and Alexia; brother, James (Carole) E. Marbury, Sr.; three sisters, Helen (Thomas) M. Sherrod, Marcia M. Riley, and Antoinette (Frank) M. DaCruz; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Althea was predeceased by her parents; brother, E. Jefferson "Jeff" Marbury, Jr.; four sisters, Ethel M. Howell, Gladys M. Baldwin, Myrtle M. Caster, and Dorothy M. Smith; and brother-in-law, William Riley. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Covenant Church of Easton, 1 Sport Hill Road, Easton, Connecticut 06612.
