Alton E. Thompson, Sr. DARLINGTON - Alton E. Thompson, Sr., age 85, of Florence died Friday, January 6, 2012. Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 8 in Black Creek Baptist Church with burial in Black Creek Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Born November 20, 1926 in Florence County, he was the son of the late Calvin and Ruth Carter Thompson. Alton worked for the state as a Highway Supervisor for the Highway Department. He was a long time member of Black Creek Baptist Church where he was a deacon, a choir member and a part of the men's Sunday school class. He served in the SC National Guard for thirty years. Surviving is his wife Margaret Gainey Thompson, a son, Alton E. (Emma) Thompson, Jr. of Darling-ton, a Daughter, Phyllis (Frank) Thompson Barber of Rosten, NC, two step-sons: Richard E. (Trudy) Gainey Sr. of Florence, Steven M. (Barbara) Gainey, of Kennesaw, GA; two step-daughters: Harriett (Billy) Gainey Mahn of Darlington, Violet (Robert) Gainey Self Haywood of Fayettville, NC; grand-children: Chris Mahn, Teresa Mahn Porupski, Jason Mahn, Chad Gainey, Chad Milford, Sonia Self Licardo, Scott Self, Erin Gainey, Matthew Gainey, Woody Barber, Dean Barber, Susan Barber Hackett and sixteen great-grands. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Ethridge "Bill" Thompson, Theo Thompson, Billy Thompson; and a sister Emmie Weaver. The family will receive friends from 5-7 P.M. Saturday, January 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Black Creek Baptist Church, 139 Mont Clare Rd. Darlington, SC 29540. A guestbook is available online at www.belkfuneralhome.com.
