Alvin Loosli Obituary

Published by San Francisco Chronicle from Jul. 28 to Jul. 29, 2022.
Alvin Loosli, M.D.
November 30, 1942 - July 15, 2022
It's with great sadness we announce the passing of Alvin R. Loosli, M.D., a beloved doctor, friend, father, grandfather, husband and profoundly cherished member of the community. His life was full of love and joy and ultimately ended on June 15th, 2022 by way of a brain tumor.
Al and his twin brother Ed were born on November 30, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Clayton G. Loosli (Idaho) and Jean Pedersen (Utah). In high school the family moved to South Pasadena where Al excelled in football and basketball. In 1960-64, he attended & played football for Colorado College. In 1964, he began his medical journey at UCSF Medical School, San Francisco, CA, followed by a general internship at Los Angeles County Hospital. Al was proud to serve as a flight surgeon in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1969 -1972, taking care of army helicopter pilots and their families. This experience inspired Al and when he finished with the military, he chose to focus his career in family practice medicine. He began a residency at the Contra Costa County Hospital in Martinez, CA, where he spent time in general medicine, orthopedics & trauma. Al's love of sports never wavered and in 1980 he began practicing rehabilitation & Sports Medicine at the Saint Francis Hospital in San Francisco. He founded its satellite clinic, The Walnut Creek Center for Sports Medicine, in 1986.
His practice attracted many professional athletes throughout the years and he remained a medical consultant to Olympians and many others until his passing. He had numerous articles and research papers published as well as speaking and teaching engagements throughout his career. Al's relentless optimism was infectious and inspired patients of all ages and abilities on their path to healing. He particularly enjoyed working with teenagers, volunteering with local high schools and being a sideline doc for over 40 years.
Al worked exceptionally hard and enjoyed every minute of it - and he also loved to play. He enjoyed waterfalls, hiking, flower arranging, tie dye, food, ipad photography and, of course, music. These are the things that filled him full of joy and allowed his creativity to flourish.
Al is lovingly remembered by wife Connie Loosli; children Jenna Loosli Carson, Becca Loosli, & Clayton Loosli; grandchildren JD Carson, Dimond Loosli, Brady Carson, Lexi Carson, & Kaia Loosli; twin brother Ed Loosli and many other family members and friends that will miss him deeply. Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service celebrating his life on October 8th, 2022 at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church at 1:30 pm. I had knee trouble and was facing surgery when I heard Ed Baxter on KGO radio say he went to Dr Al for knee problems. I went to Dr Al and he looked at my x-ray and said, there's a lot of cartiladge in there. He gave me some exercises which I still do. The swelling on my knee went down and the pain went away. He was a Giants fan and I would send him a Giants schedule every year. He was the best and I pass his exercises onto to others to this day. Thanks Dr. AL. You were the best! Connie, I was so very saddened to hear about A'ls Passing.
It was my hope that he would have more time to spend with family.
I know that you all have wonderful memories of this special man who had a way of making his patients and friends feel that overcoming injuries was his purpose in life. He somehow did this with such grace and charm, often times making you laugh and feel more confident about overcoming the issue you were dealing.
His memory will live on in so many of us.
Our friend will be sorely missed.
Best Wishes to All,
Lillian Wallace

Dear Connie and Family, Our whole family is so sorry about Al's passing. We just found out and we send our deep felt condolences. Al was such a special man, Dr. , friend, Soccer Coach and everything else that is good. He helped us and put us all back together in so many ways. so many times. I especially remember the time he helped me to walk and he was as excited as Wayne and I and we all had a little tear. He helped Lance when he was 12 and instead of surgery he did the Quad sets Al showed him and still does them today and was able to do 2 Spartan races at 51. He helped Kim and Sean and Wayne in the same way. We deeply appreciated him and you and send our love and prayers to all of you! Wayne and Carol Martin

Dear Loosli family: Dr. Loosli's passing is a profound loss certainly to his loving family and also to his patients. He was an enormous gift in my life over decades. He cared for me through any number of overuse injuries. An amazingly talented man with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor! Dr. Loosli will always have a special place in my heart. Remember Dr. loosing very well at County Hospital. Had numerous interactions with Al, as a Deputy Sheriff, when he was treating assault victims in the ER etc.
Also admired as a softball opponent in city leagues, " Al could play "
Wonderful guy
