Amanda Schmitt Obituary
She was born in Altoona on April 20, 1986, to Thomas Schmitt and Denise Katz. Amanda was a 2004 graduate of Altoona Area High School. She went on to attend Slippery Rock University where she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and reading specialization in 2008. Amanda loved teaching and helping her students to become not just better readers, but better people. She had a passion for animals and was involved in fundraising and supporting local animal shelters. In her free time, Amanda loved spending time with her family, traveling and being on Lake Erie and was an avid fitness enthusiast.
She continues to live on through her father, Thomas and his partner, Robyn Confer; mother, Denise (Katz) and stepfather, Andrew Katz; brother, Brandon; sister-in-law, Ivannette and niece, Sofia; sisters, Allison and Vanessa; stepsister, Anna Shaw (Brian); and stepbrother, David Katz; and grandmothers, Elizabeth Davis and Patricia Schmitt and aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by grandfathers, Arthur Davis and Carl Schmitt.
Friends and family will be received at 409 26th St., Altoona, Pa., on Friday, from 1 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Juniata United Methodist Church, led by Pastor T.R. Hardic.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania, 2407 Zimmerly Road, Erie, PA 16506.
Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of the James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel, Pa.

I had the privilege of teaching with Amanda, as well as seeing her at the gym. Her energy was refreshing! Amanda's bright smile will be missed, but will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Praying for all who loved her.

I did not know Amanda personally, but spoke with her at length about her dogs. I was looking forward to meeting her and the family tomorrow afternoon to work with some concerns she had with her dogs.
