Amelia Lee Cunningham, artist and painter, died on November 30, 2010, as the result of an automobile accident in Taos, New Mexico. Lee, the daughter of Jane Cunningham and Lou Galosy of Longview, and Bruce Cunningham of Austin, was born May 14, 1952, in Longview, Texas.
As a child, Lee attended Trinity Day School and graduated from Longview High School in 1970. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, on a full academic scholarship, and graduated with honors in 1973. She studied at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, and later received her Master of Fine Arts degree, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin.
Lee was a ninth-generation Texan, with family ancestors in the Longview area dating to the early 1800s.
For several years during the 1980s, Lee taught art classes at Trinity School of Texas in Longview, and was a talented painter, sculptor and potter. Lee's love for painting and art began at the age of 7, and by age 16, she was first published in a modern art periodical in Paris, France. She was a featured artist in a number of art galleries across the United States. Most recently, Lee opened her own art studio and gallery in Taos, New Mexico. Not bound to any one style or process, she produced abstract as well as figurative oil paintings, mosaic tile installations, welded metal functional sculpture, pottery and mixed media masks and wall hangings. Her works, spanning four decades, can be viewed on her website at www.cunninghamworks.webuda.com.
In addition to her love of art, Lee was an avid outdoor enthusiast. She loved hiking in the mountains of New Mexico and kayaking the rivers and streams. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Longview.
Lee is survived by her parents; her son, Alan Blair Cammack of Taos, New Mexico; and one grandson, Owen James Dunn. She is also survived by an aunt, Amelia "Mimi Castleberry Tierney of Flagler Beach, Florida; and cousins, Sean Tierney of San Francisco, California, Minnette Carpenter of Jefferson, Texas, and Sicily Williams of Houston.
A family memorial service will be held in Taos, New Mexico, at a future date.

I just recently learned of Lee's death from Mavis Powell, Holly's mother. My connection to Lee, like Holly's, was through Camp Waldemar. How I admired and adored her! I'll never forget her outstanding leadership as Aztec Leader and stern of Zuma, the Aztec War Canoe. Even though it's been many years ago, I remembered her with fondness and will always be grateful for the profound influence she had on me. My prayers are with all of her family. I am so speechless and filled with a deep longing for my friend Lee. We were so connected in our souls since summer camp, Camp Waldemar. It didn't matter how far apart we were from each other, we always picked up the conversation where we left off. I want Alan, Jane, Lou and Bruce to know how much I loved her. She was a huge influence in my life. She signed every letter and card she ever sent me....
Love and appreciate you, Lee.
Love and appreciate YOU Lee, Holly.
I will miss you so much...

I am so sorry about the loss of your daughter. Lee and I went to Trinity Day School together, but she was older than me. I was so impressed by her artwork, that each year I would search for her work when it was on exhibit in Nicholson Library. She will be missed. May God be with you and you have our prayers.

Jane and Lou,
The Simons Family will keep you in our hearts and prayers at this time. We understand the loss of a wonderful daughter who brought so much to those she touched. Lee always had the true spirit of caring and she displayed it through her magnificent works of art. She taught my children at Trinity and I did work with her many times as dedicated volunteers while we were in Longview. Our love will always remain with those of you who touched our lives. Please know that you will remain in our prayers.

For the family of Lee Cunningham, Words cannot express the sadness that I am feeling for the tragic loss of Lee. I was only a school time friend long ago, but never forgot how this girl touched my heart throughout my years at LHS...This woman will be missed by all that ever came across her path. I am so sorry, may the Lord of our Jesus Christ give you His Peace and Understanding at this time....Mancil Hervey (Denver, Colo.)

Dear Jane, Lou and family,
The loss of Lee is so sad personally and for the art community as well. She was a real talent as we all know and seemed to be on the cusp of having even more widespread acclaim by moving to Taos. Longview will always be proud of the "Alley Art" wallscapes she gave us and any eclectic pieces we might have been able to collect. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to show her work at the museum here. She may well have been Longview's greatest secret about to be shared with art collectors everywhere. Her loss is huge because we'll never get to see the next exciting idea that comes out of her mind, but we know that pales to the rawness you feel of her loss to your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you honor and remember how special Lee was.

I'm not even sure what to say...Except my heart is broken. I am so sorry. We can only be grateful for all that Lee brought to our lives. She had this incredibly unique spirit - and it always felt wonderful to be in her presence...May God comfort those she leaves here in sadness and in disbelief...

Dear Jane and Lou.....how deeply saddened we all are at this tragic loss of Lee. Though no longer with us, her boundless talent and creative works of art remain to enhance our lives and make this World a more interesting place. What a legacy she leaves and how proud you must be of the life, though short, she had on this Earth.
With love and appreciation for her life.

Dearest Jane and Lou,
I cannot believe that this happened to our wonderful, talented, precious friend Lee - she was so excited about having her own gallery!
Claire and I could not have made "Private Stock" such a special cookbook without all of her fantastic art work, and we had such a good time as we worked together!
I want you to know that we pray daily for Lee and for you at this tragic time, and for all of us who loved her!
All my love,
Betty

Lee's family: I'm haunted by the tradegy that happen Tuesday on the road to my house here in Taos! I am even more sadden not to know that Lee was even here in Taos and we had not made contact. Although we were at Longview High School together, I did not get to know Lee until we worked together at Trinity Day School, where she taught my daughter, Leslie Walters, art for many years. My heart goes out to you all.... Please contact me if I can be of any help with the memorial here in Taos. Teresa Trent Panza (575-741-0443)

Dear Jane, Mimi, Lou, and all,
Though away many years, Longview and my childhood friends are still sealed in my heart. I will always remember Lee as the bright, smiling, beautiful young girl that I knew growing up. I send my deepest sympathy to all and hope that knowing that longtime and far reaching friends are thinking about you during this difficult time will assuage your grief.
