A native of Winfield, he was born Nov. 28, 1927, a son of the late Ammon F. Sr. and Beulah Baker Benfer. On Feb. 13, 1955, he married the former Hazel Vanatta, who survives. His passing breaks a marital union of 50 years.
Mr. Benfer was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the Army from Nov. 8, 1950, to Nov. 8, 1952, with the 969 Engineer Construction Battalion.
He was a retired truck driver with 45 years of service.
Ammon was a member of Montandon United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Mifflinburg, the Montandon American Legion and the Teamsters Union 764.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children and their families, David A. and Sandy Benfer of Martinsburg and their children Jennifer and Tighe Williams, Michael and Melissa Benfer, and great-grandchildren Madison and Mason; Timothy L. and LouAnn Benfer of Milton and their children, Emily and Megan Benfer; and Thomas M. and Lisa Benfer and their children, Shawn and Toni Benfer, and great-grandchildren, Brian and Ashley Mabus, and Matthew and Renee Benfer. Also surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Hazel Benfer of Watsontown, and two sisters, Lydia Walter of Lewisburg and Eleanor Wallize of Milton.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth J. Benfer and Charles Bruss.
Friends and relatives will be received from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will follow at 7:30 with the Rev. James E. Lewis officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at the discretion of the family.
Donations may be made in Mr. Benfer's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
