Amy Monahan-Curtis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 30, 2024.
Amy Kay Monahan-Curtis, age 51, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on August 28, 2024, due to a long battle with kidney disease, at home with her loving husband Tim Curtis and devoted mother Karen Turner by her side.

Amy was born September 28, 1972, the daughter of Michael Monahan and Karen Turner. Amy married Tim Curtis on October 5, 2012, and the two enjoyed nearly 12 special years of marriage.

She and her husband were perfect soulmates undoubtedly brought together by God. They met anonymously on a Christian dating website, and it turned out they lived only one block away from each other. They found out they had worked for the same company as journalists, were born 4 months apart, and went to rival high schools. Right away they knew that they were made to love each other.

Amy and Tim adored each other and were inseparable, enjoying each other's company whether cooking together, going out to dinner, traveling, binge-watching crime dramas, or simply sitting together and talking about anything and everything. They made each other laugh every day. She was a chocolate lover, and knew she had met her kindred spirit when Tim said after arriving for a trip to a B&B, "Do we have enough chocolate?"

Their favorite trips were to Phoenix to visit family and to Sharon Woods to see the fall leaves.

Amy loved to read and write. Among her favorite books were Louise Erdrich's "Love Medicine," Barbara Kingsolver's "Unsheltered," and C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia." She also loved jewelry, candles, and coming up with new recipes.

Amy always had a love of the Lord and rested in Him during her many health challenges. It was important to her to live her faith. She was a supportive, loving, and thoughtful wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and friend.

Amy was a peaceful, gentle soul which was apparent to everyone she met. Right before she passed, she said she was looking forward to seeing her grandparents, and other family and friends who had passed, in Heaven.

Amy was a 1990 graduate of Finneytown High School, earned her Bachelor of Arts in English/Journalism at Miami University in 1994, and earned a Master of Fine Arts in English/Creative Writing from Ohio State University in 1999. Her master's thesis was an accomplished book of poetry and short stories.

Amy worked for 13 years as a newspaper reporter and editor at The Community Press. She also worked as an English instructor at Ohio State University and a freelance journalist.

Left to cherish Amy's memory include her husband, Tim Curtis; mother Karen Turner and father Michael Monahan; sibling Andrew Monahan and sister-in-law Casey Monahan; niece Meara Monahan and nephew Isaac Monahan; special friend and sister-in-faith Carla Abernathy; and many other cherished family members. Amy is preceded in death by stepfather Greg Turner.

A memorial service will take place Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, at Vineyard Central Church, 1759 Mills Ave., Norwood, OH 45212. Visitation is 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Service begins at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to City Gospel Mission at citygospelmission.org.

Here are two of Amy's favorite poems.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there. I did not die.

- Mary Elizabeth Frye

Now for you there is no rain, for one is shelter to the other.

Now for you the sun shall not burn, for one is shelter to the other.

Now for you nothing is hard or bad, for the hardness and badness is taken by one for the other.

Now for you there is no night, for one is light to the other,

Now for you the snow has ended always, for one is protection for the other.

It is that way, from now on, from now on. And now there is comfort.

Now there is no loneliness. Now forever, forever, there is no loneliness.

May God be with you and bless you and may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

I was a friend of Amy's from years ago, and was so saddened to discover this news of her passing. Amy made those she met instantly comfortable, as she was so easy to talk with; she spoke kindly and listened so well. She always brightened the day when she was around, and her curious mind and smiling, bright eyes made the world a better place.

Thank you for sharing so much in the obituary, so we can see her bravery and strength, and the love of her family. Wonderful that she and Tim found each other to share their lives. I love the poems that are shared - they are perfect, and help to bring a little light to our sadness. - Rich

I loved to listen to Amy's perspective and soulful perspectives in our women's group. Every time I see a butterfly it reminds me of her gentle personality and genuine beauty. You will be missed, sweet friend.

Hi Tim. Please add me to your long list of friends' condolences. I hope the strong support helps somewhat, I feel for you in your grief. I didn't know Amy, of course, but clearly she was a very strong and courageous person.

Amy and I were very close school friends. I had always admired her kindness and how studious she was. I spent many times with her, her Mom Karen and even some times with Andy. We have only run into each other a few times since high school and I have always wondered how she was. I liked reading her work and Facebook posts to check in. I´m glad she is in Heaven with other friends and family dancing with Jesus in zero pain... I´m sending her husband, Tim and her family a big hug and will pray for comfort during this time... My first memory of Amy was talking to her on the phone when I moved to AZ to be with Andy. After hearing her struggles, chronic pain, and her disabilities I realized SHE had prepared Andy for me. I think of that often and I´m appreciative to her beyond words for readying my place in his heart. One of my favorite moments with Amy was when she recited the Irish poem contained herein at Andy and my wedding (And Tim totally killed it as our officiant!). Amy always made me laugh, and we loved every moment of her and Tim´s visits. She and Tim are the BEST Aunt and Uncle any kids could ever hope to have. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. She will be remembered forever, as long as we all live.

What I remember most about Amy is her quiet kind demeanor. Out of that would come such wisdom and love
