GARNEAU, Andre Brigadier-General O St-J, CD Andre passed away peacefully on January 2, 2004, aged 82, He was born in Quebec City, the eldest son of Colonel Gerard Garneau OBE, ED and Andree de Varennes. In 1926, the family moved to Ottawa. Andre enlisted in the militia (GGFG) in 1937 and then, in the University of Ottawa COTC in 1940. In 1942, he joined the Regiment de Maisonneuve as a lieutenant and was promoted to captain while serving with them in the North West Europe Campaign. Returning to Canada, he transferred to the Royal 22e Regiment. In 1946, he married Jean Richardson. The 30 years of peacetime soldiering that followed included two years in occupied Germany, four years at the College Militaire in St-Jean, three years at NATO in London, England, two years commanding the 3rd Bn Royal 22e Regiment, three years as military attache in Yugoslavia and Greece and four years as assistant secretary to the Governors General Michener and Leger. Following his military retirement, Andre worked eight years on the Canadian Pension Commission. During the 80's he was President of the Ottawa branch of the Red Cross. Jean and Andre had four sons. Braun, (deceased), Marc (Pamela), Charles, Philippe (Gillian) and eleven grandchildren. Surviving Andre are Jean, one sister (Paule) and three brothers (Pierre, Gerard, Jean). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Ottawa Cathedral, Sussex Drive at 10:30 a.m. on 9 January 2004.
