Andrew "Andy" Gatzert Spiegel

Andy Spiegel passed away on September 14 after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Judith Musick, who survives him, along with his cherished daughters Sally Spiegel and Jill (Joseph) Brozic. Andy also leaves behind his step-siblings John Hirsch, Steven Hirsch, and Suzanne Binswanger, and his treasured stepchildren, Meg (Mike) Makely and Hugh (Judine O'Shea) Musick; as well as his step grandchildren Leigh Makely, Georgia Makely Schraeder (Tom), Morley Musick, and Eleanor Musick. He was predeceased by his brother Frederick William Spiegel, Jr., his first wife Sue Wolff Spiegel, and his parents, Clara Gatzert Spiegel and Frederick William Spiegel.

Andy began his career as an actor in New York, performing in theater and television, before launching a successful career as a stockbroker in Chicago. An outdoorsman with a passion for skiing, swimming, and fly-fishing, Andy's love for new experiences was as boundless as his sense of humor, which his friends and family fondly remember.

Andy and Judith traveled the world together, forging a life filled with love and adventure.

He had a lifelong interest in history and a fascination with trains, particularly steam engines. His curiosity and intelligence remained with him until the end of his life. He was a philanthropist who supported the Ounce of Prevention Fund (now, Start Early) and gifted the Newberry Library a noted set of Hemingway manuscripts.

In his final years, Andy was cared for by group of devoted women. Rose Wesby, Connie Moralez, Kate Newman, Charlene Howard, Masha Belaev, Janice Moseley, and Natalia Polyvkk brought comfort to him and his family.

Andy was a wonderful soul, sensitive, and absolutely unique. He will be remembered for his humor, his kind and generous heart, and the immense love he shared with his wife and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
