SUTHERLAND Andrew Reed Sutherland September 25, 1963 - May 10, 2021 Andrew Reed Sutherland died May 10, 2021 from a head injury, with his loving family in attendance. He was 57 years old. Andrew was a brilliant and natural teacher, an adventurer and a mystic, and most importantly to him, fiercely devoted to his family. Born in Amman, Jordan September 25, 1963, Andrew was the son of a career diplomatic family, and spent most of his early years in the Middle East. He attended high school at St. Paul's Academy in New Hampshire, and found his lifelong mentor in Cliff Gillespie, his wrestling coach. Andrew was a natural leader and excelled in school, and as a result was awarded a prized Morehead Scholarship from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, from where he graduated in 1986 with a degree in biology. During Andrew's junior year at UNC, he was awarded the Ernest L. Mackie Award, presented to the man of the junior class who has been judged most outstanding in character, scholarship and leadership. Andrew said he received this award despite being a classmate of the all-time great basketball player, Michael Jordan! He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity, and the Order of the Old Well, an honorary organization that recognized students for exemplary contributions to the University, The Morehead scholarship included travel around the world after graduation. While visiting Taiwan, Andrew was invited to teach English. Here he met his wife, YuHua Kuo, the love of his life, with whom he established Blue World English language school in the city of Kaohsiung. He and YuHua came to live in the United States in 2002, after their two daughters, Natalia Yu-Hsin (jade heart) and Maria-Petra An-Ling (tranquil spirit) were born. Andrew went on to pursue his Master's in Education at Johns Hopkins University. He received his degree in 2008 and taught grade school in the Chevy Chase area for many years. He took his family to many countries to meet the world, sharing his love of nature, travel, and culture. He never lost his love of adventure, and would periodically go "on walkabout,' camping or hiking to be in solitude and nature. He was a charismatic speaker and a strong writer. More recently he was focused on the editing of his first book, Lei Long, a children's book, and was working on a second. Andrew is survived by his wife YuHua of Kaohsiung, Taiwan; his daughters, Natalia Sutherland and Maria Sutherland of Chevy Chase, MD, and at university in Amherst, MA and Santa Barbara, CA, respectively. He is also survived by his mother, Carol T. Sutherland of Chevy Chase, and his three older siblings, Anora S. McGaha of Cary, NC, Paul Sutherland of Potomac, MD, and Susan Sutherland of San Francisco, CA, and their spouses. He is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles, and his nephew Jason Hsu. Andrew was predeceased by his father, Peter A. Sutherland. Condolences can be sent to the Sutherland's home. Stories about Andrew will be cherished. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 19, 11 a.m., at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC.
