Andy "Dee" Zampini was born in Wilmington in 1924 and passed away peacefully on February 13, 2013. He was the son of the late Andrew and Maria (Aldi) Zampini of Dugenta, Italy.
Andy and his wife of 65 years, Anne (DeStefano) were the first of the Zampini family to move to the suburbs and purchased one of the first homes built in Fairfax where they lived for over fifty years.
Andy attended Brown Vocational High School and served in the U.S. Army's 50th Field Artillery Battalion in Europe during World War II. He worked as a repairman at the GM Assembly Plant for 39 years where he retired at the age of 62. Andy always worked very hard to provide for his family, sometimes working two and three jobs to make sure his children had what they needed to thrive.
Andy loved to sing especially with his nieces and nephews from the Casapulla family. He always was the life of the party and loved to laugh and have a good time. He and Anne spent over 25 winters in Naples, Florida and loved the sun and fun of the warm winters there. He was an avid golfer and was a stickler about following the rules of the game. In his retirement, he could always be found reading the newspaper from cover to cover or reading a novel.
Andy is survived by his wife Anne, and his children, Andrew (Eileen) of Milton, Marie Allen (Jerry) of Hockessin, Michael of Wilmington and Carl (Joan) of Newark. He was "Pop-Pop" to his grandchildren, Erin (deceased), Theresa, Michael (Kerry Gleason), Christina and Stephanie (and their mother Linda Zampini) and Zachary, and "Old Pop-Pop" to his great-grandchildren, Sophia, Lucas and Antonio.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Monday February 18, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington where friends may visit from 10 to 11:30 am. Interment will follow Mass at Cathedral Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 or to the Erin Allen Memorial Fund, 172 Oldbury Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
