ANITA ALANO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 15, 2014.
ALANO ANITA
63, died following a three-year struggle with breast cancer on January 11, 2014. She is survived by mother, Isabel Alano; husband, Merle Jantz; brothers, Louis (Theresa) and Peter (Peggy) Alano; nephew, Jack Francis; and niece, Bridget Eileen Alano; and cousins, Frank (Carol) and Tom Ciaccia. Anita, a gifted and award-winning artist, loved animals and nature and often used them as inspirations for her work. She grew up in Rochester, New York, and obtained a bachelor's degree in art education from Buffalo State University and a master's degree in painting from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After teaching elementary school art for 17 years for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, she took an early retirement, having grown tired of the increasingly bitter struggles with small-minded administrators over cutting funding and resources for the arts in favor of what they termed "real" subjects. It was a decision she never regretted. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills, 1240 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, we request donations to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffett Street, Pittsburgh, PA, 15243. Funeral arrangements entrusted to ANTHONY M. MUSMANNO FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-331-0900. Please view our online guestbook:

OMG, I had no idea Anita was battling breast cancer. I was searching legacy.com for the obit of one of our high school classmates when I came across Anita's obit. I am heartbroken. We were best friends throughout high school and beyond. Last time we saw each other was at her Dad's viewing. Anita was a great friend with a bizarre sense of humor, just like me, and a great laugh. Heartfelt sympathy to Isabelle, Merle, Louis and Peter. This is just so sad...

Dear Aunt Isabel, Louis, Peter, Merle and families. Anita put up a good fight. We'll all miss her but her wonderful artistry lives on for the world to enjoy.

Our sympathy and love,

The Medici family

Merle, I am so sorry for your loss as well as all of her family.
Some people come into our lives, make footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. Anita certainly did this. In my heart she will always be a thought away. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
