Ann McManus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2025.
Ann McManus nee Gillen, a cherished Irish-American woman known for her warm smile and generous spirit, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on August 18, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born and raised in Derry City, Northern Ireland, on September 14, 1932, the third daughter of John and Bridget Gillen, Ann was one of four devoted siblings-Theresa, Agnes, and John-with whom she shared a close bond that endured across the decades and continents. A gifted pianist in her youth, she won several awards in piano competitions, a testament to her discipline and artistic spirit.

Ann immigrated to Boston at a young age and later moved to New York City, where she worked for Air Lingus and Pan-Am. Eventually settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, she met and married her devoted husband, Ray. Together, they raised two sons, Paul and John.

In the Bay Area, Ann worked as a substitute teacher at Nativity School in Menlo Park and was deeply committed to volunteering, especially at the local soup kitchen and through Meals on Wheels. She was beloved for her cheerful demeanor, her infectious Irish smile, and her love of laughter and good conversation.

Ann cherished daily long walks to La Jolla Village, loved to cook, was an avid reader, and her heart belonged equally to Ireland and the United States. Her lifelong affection for animals was evident in the many dogs and cats she lovingly adopted. Ann was also a faithful attendee of Mary Star of the Sea church.

She is survived by her beloved husband Ray, and her sons Paul and John, who deeply loved and will forever miss her warmth and joy.

Ann McManus's life was a beautiful bridge between her Irish roots and American journey-a testament to love, family, and community.
