Ann Michaels

Ann M. Michaels (nee Newton), 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning on Monday, December 16, 2024. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Frederick (Fred) and Margaret (Maggie) and her much older sister Nellie all of Portsmouth, England. She is survived by her husband of almost 59 years, John Michaels, daughters Rebecca Michaels (Patrick Fifield) of Cleveland, OH and Rachel Michaels (David Richardson) of Albany, NY, and grandson Will.

Ann was born in Portsmouth, England prior to World War II. During the war, due to the danger from bombing in Portsmouth, Ann was evacuated to farms in western England. In 1961, at the age of 25, she adventurously moved to Boston, MA with her lifelong friend from Portsmouth, Joan Dutson. Though she lived in the States for most of the rest of her life, she remained quintessentially English at heart. Ann met her husband, John Michaels, while living in Boston where they both worked at Massachusetts General Hospital. They married in 1965 and eventually moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada for 3 years and then to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1974, where they raised their family.

Ann had a way with animals, particularly dogs, and worked with them from the age of 17 onwards. In her teens, she started working for veterinarians in Portsmouth and then as a veterinary assistant at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital in London. In Cincinnati, in 1982, she became a veterinary technician at the Madeira Veterinary Hospital where she worked for twenty years (1982-2002) until her retirement. Ann's close friends, both in England and the States, were her extended family and she and John loved to travel to visit them whenever possible. She greatly enjoyed reading British mystery novels, working in the yard and her flower garden, going for long hikes in the woods or brisk walks closer to home, and eating good food with a glass of wine.

The family would like to thank the staff of Arden Courts of Kenwood, Ohio for their compassionate care while Ann was in residence.
