Anna Galarza Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 5, 2025.
Anna Mantilla Galarza, 69, passed away quietly on June 28, 2025 at the hospital in the company of her youngest daughter Iasha (Leesh) Greene by her bedside.

Born and raised in the city of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, she was the eldest daughter in the Mantilla family and the 2nd child of 5. She set out to start a new life in New York City at the age of 12 with plans to live with an aunt she could babysit for while she attends school. She eventually fell in love and migrated down to Philadelphia.

While relishing the city of brotherly love, she discovered a passion for cosmetology and quickly cultivated an affinity for beauty as a professional hairdresser. She would continue to make beautiful things, her two daughters Ruby and Iasha being among her best. Her masterpiece of a family, however, wouldn't be complete until two children later, when her sons Leonardo (Lenny) and Jordan (Baybaso) Galarza came into the picture. Her professional life would be decorated with countless appointments, hair shows, working at home and at numerous salons, capped off by the ownership and management of her very own salon.

Anna was a woman driven by curiosity, passion, and hospitality. Very much the holy trinity of human enjoyment, she was the embodiment of coolness, a person genuinely charming, polite, and delightful, with insanely contagious laughter. Quick-witted and good-natured, she was a master at making people feel special. To her, everyone she met was deserving of love, forgiveness, and the chance to be heard.

She always saw the bright side of bad people and the good opportunities in dire circumstances. After all, she made her living by making timeless beauty out of something temporarily ugly. It now falls on us to find the timeless beauty of her life in the temporary ugliness of her absence.

Anna is predeceased by her father, Felix Mantilla, and sister, Maria Mantilla. She is graciously survived by her Mother, Santa Matias; her siblings, Victor (Choco) Mantilla Sr., Felipe (Pipo) Mantilla, Olga Iris Matias; Her children, Ruby Schwartzberg, Iasha Greene, Leonardo Galarza, and Jordan Galarza; her grandchildren, Luis, Noah, Dominic, and Luciana Maria, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her welcoming service on July 16, 2025 at 9:30am-10am followed by the funeral mass at 10:00am-11am at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at 2000 Shelmire Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19152.

To The Family Of Anna Galarza,

Words cannot describe how sorry I am for your loss. Please allow me to take this opportunity to express and extend my deepest sympathies and very utmost, genuine, sincere, and heartfelt condolences to each and every one of you during these unusual and unprecedented times in this crazy but beautiful and blessed world that we live in. This is a tragic loss for all of us. I can only imagine what you all are going through.

Anna was such a great warm hearted and wonderful person. It all started Mother´s Day of 2017 when she was working at the barbershop in Walmart at Philadelphia Mills Mall. I walked up to her and asked her if I could borrow a pen so I can write a card out for my mother for Mother´s Day. Of course she said yes, and I made sure that I gave the pen back. Other good memories were when we would go to Las margaritas and Bar Louie for either lunch or dinner or when I would crash at her apartments. She would also come to my house when I would have parties around the holidays. With this being said, Anna was the kind of person that would give you the shirt or the jacket off your back. She always put others first before herself as she was selfless.

The last time I spoke to Anna was June 3 of this year on WhatsApp via video chat. A few weeks later, I went on vacation and I would call her and text her not realizing until this past Sunday that she had passed away on June 28, the same day that I came home from my trip to Canada. What´s ironic is I called her during the early morning hours on June 28 not knowing that she was in the hospital from a car accident.

Despite her health and this tragedy, she is at peace and in a better place as she is not suffering from anything anymore. Anna, you are here in spirit. Ruby, Iasha, Lenny, and Jordan, I am here if you all need and/or want anything.

Love And God Bless,
Bilal "Billy" Urahman Ahmad

Anna,
It still doesn't feel real you aren't with us. From the moment I met you, you became more than my hairstylist. I can still heard your voice calling me Mamita, asking me about my flaco Peter and the boys. I'll treasure all the memories with you, your advice, going dancing, to concerts and bingo. I'll miss you my Philly Mom.
