AnnaRose King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 15, 2021.
September 12, 1985 - January 3, 2021 KING--AnnaRose McLaughlin. A filmmaker whose work explored the quirky, tender, poignant, and funny aspects of young love and life, died on January 3 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan. She was 35. Her death followed a valiant, almost three year battle with cancer. Ms. King is survived by her husband, Michael Charles Telis, and their four year old daughter, Willow Rose King Telis, of Brooklyn, NY. Aside from her husband and daughter, she is survived by her mother, Alison Therese Moore of Brooklyn, NY, her sister Lucinda Monroe King of Los Angeles, CA, and her mother and father-in-law, Karen and Sherman Telis, of Washington, DC. She is the daughter of the late Roger Monroe King. Born in Manhattan, she grew up in Beverly Farms, MA. She was a graduate of Miss Porter's School, in Farmington, CT, earned her bachelor's degree in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College, and her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Film Production from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. AnnaRose wrote, directed, and starred in the feature length film, "Good Enough," and co-created, wrote and directed the web series "American Viral" starring Michael Showalter. In a testament to her drive, creativity, stamina, and ability to see love and humor during the most trying human moments, she was selected as a 2020 Sundance Institute FilmTwo Fellow for her original screenplay about a young woman from New York on a last-ditch effort to heal her incurable cancer by participating in a cutting-edge experimental treatment in Houston. AnnaRose had a playful spirit and profound love and caring for others. Her friendships spanned continents and were close and enduring. AnnaRose worked hard, lived fully, loved to travel around the world, and generously hosted friends and family at her beloved home in Sherman, CT. Her generosity extended not only to those in her wide circle, but spread to so many others in need, including through the cancer research fund she established at MD Anderson. I met her at Miss Porters. She was a funny, smart, kind young woman. Her family is in my prayers as they deal with this terrible loss. I am certain she is making them laugh in heaven.

I was Anna Rose's second grade teacher and even today, the thought of her brings up a vibrant, empathetic and funny blond ball of energy. She was a firecracker in the class and such a positive one! I am so sad by this news and that her young daughter has lost a great mother. She has the nugget of her mom in her, and I am sure her family will keep Anna Rose alive. My prayers are with her husband, her mom Alison and sister Lucy. I remember you all fondly.

When I see the amazing young woman that Anna Rose became, I am not surprised in the least. I taught her 5th grade, and she was a firecracker. She had an incredible sense of justice, a strong moral compass, and she was, smart, kind, and hilarious. I am so saddened that we have lost such an amazing gift, but I hope that her presence lives on through the community that she touched in her amazing short life.

I met Anna Rose, when I had the pleasure to be one of her teachers and coaches in elementary and Middle School. I remember her so fondly as a fun, energetic young girl, who was always in the middle of the action. She brought so much to her class and this school, I will never forget seeing her on stage during middle school productions. She was always the star of the show. This news saddens me so much. My thoughts and prayers go to her family and friends.
