Anne DAWSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 7, 2022.
Anne Dawson of Cambridge, ON, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Sunday June 5, 2022. Annie Florence Dawson (nee Carter) born in her grandmother's house in Broad Cove, Francois, Newfoundland to cherished parents Bill and Effie Carter.

Beloved wife and best friend for 62 years to Ross Dawson whom she met at the Empire Coffee Shop in downtown Hespeler. Ross said he knew he wanted to marry Anne as soon as he met her.

Anne was the fiercely proud mother of Carolyn (Don), Alan (Cindy), Paula, Rod, Ruth (Clarke) and loving and proud grandmother of Isabella (Griffin), Cole, Tyler, Jeff (Amanda), Scott (Lynsay), Carter, Sarah, Charlie, and Kael. She loved supporting and celebrating her grandchildren in their sports, academics, and careers. She was their biggest cheerleader.

Survived by her loving siblings and in-laws: Muriel Touchings, Joe Carter, Barbara Carter, Susan Burr, Bill Carter (Laurie) and Barbara Burns (Art) along with many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Effie and Bill Carter, parents in-law Isabel and Walter Dawson, brother Lloyd Carter, brothers-in law Joe Touchings, Jack Tilson, Edward Burr, Ken Dawson and sisters-in-law Shirley Lee and Pat Carter. Anne was also predeceased by Dakota, the dog they vowed they never would have but who became such a joy for Mom and Dad.

Anne was extremely clever and won many academic awards and honours in school. She was a stickler for proper grammar and spelling and while none of us picked up her talent for sewing and knitting we sure can spell! She worked evenings at Woods Transport when her children were small and then went on to have wonderful career opportunities at Silknit, Tiger Brand Knitting and as assistant to her son-in-law Don. In her retirement she volunteered at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Her neighbours will miss seeing her on her daily 5 km walks.

Although she moved to Ontario when she was 16, Anne was always proud of her Newfoundland roots and kept in touch with her East coast friends and relatives through the Downhome Magazine and Facebook. Anne and Ross loved to travel and had wonderful trips to Australia, Alaska, UK, Hawaii, Russia and across Canada and the US more times than we can count. When were young we often traveled as a family, tenting with our grandparents, Effie and Bill in tow, all crammed into a Studebaker station wagon!

Cremation has taken place and in honour of Anne's wishes there will be a private family gathering.

If desired, in memoriam donations can be made to St. James Anglican Church (Hespeler) or to Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

We are so very sorry to hear of Anne's passing. I worked for many years with Anne at Tiger Brand and thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent together. She was one of a kind! We tried to keep in touch and catch up through email at least once a year. She was a remarkable woman and will be truly missed. It was such an honour to know her. Deepest condolences to Ross, Carolyn and the entire family.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Anne for a number of years now. I'll always remember her for how she made me feel when I was in her company ... relaxed, happy, comfortable, curious about what was on her mind ( always interesting) She was one of the good ones and I will miss her visits... very sad news. My sincere condolences to her family, especially Rod, who I know as well and to Ross, who I never met, but who I felt I knew through talking with Anne.

To Anne's Adored family......
On behalf of staff and all of Anne's volunteer friends here at CMH we extend sincere condolences. Anne was such a mainstay and dedicated volunteer at the Registration Desk. Anne dedicated over 1400 hours during her 8 years with us. It was always a pleasure check-in with Anne, which meant an update on how one the children or grandchildren were doing. She was very very helpful when I shared i was taking a trip to NFLD, and of course we had a lovely catch-up upon my return. I love this picture of Anne that we took at Thanksgiving one year. We were asking volunteers what they were thankful, and in typical Anne fashion her humility shone through. It is us, who were so grateful to have Anne as part of the team. Thank you for sharing Anne with us. We shall miss her.....Linda Rodrigues (Manager, Volunteer Resources @ CMH)

I stood watching as the little ship sailed out to sea. The setting sun tinted the sails with a golden light and as it disappeared from sight, a voice at my side whispered "She's gone". But the sea was a narrow one. On the farther shore a little band of friends and family had gathered to watch and wait in happy expectation. Suddenly, they caught sight of the tiny sail and at the very moment when my companion whispered, "She's gone", a joyous "Here she comes!" shouted up in celebration.
So very sorry to hear of your loss Carolyn. I checked my spelling so very carefully, having read, with a smile, that your mom was a stickler. Made a couple of corrections (likely her prodding) and it is good to send now. Hope that made you smile. Your mom would like that.

Our sincere condolences on the loss of dear Anne. We first met her at St. James' through her sister, Sue. When I began work at the Hespeler library I often saw her there. She always stopped for a moment to chat and never failed to ask after my family. I will truly miss those bright moments in my days at work.
