Exeter - Anne Wingle Howard passed away on May 11th, 2025 in Exeter, NH. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James Howard.

Anne was born on May 15, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY. Her parents were Josephine Carpenter Wingle of Brooklyn, NY and Harry Michael Wingle, originally of Cleveland, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her brother Howard Peter Wingle in 1997, and her sister Frances Carpenter Wingle (Scott) in 2012. Anne and her siblings grew up in West Hempstead, NY. Anne graduated from Garden City High School, attended Wheaton College and graduated with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College in Boston, MA in 1957. Anne was a second grade teacher in the Pelham public school district before starting a family.

Anne and James married on June 15, 1957. James had a long career with Lehman Brothers in New York, and later Putnam Investments and Frontier Capital Management in Boston. They first made homes in Manhasset, NY, and later in Weston, MA where they raised four daughters, Nancy, Joanne, Janet and Susan. They retired to Savannah, Georgia, later to Kennebunkport, Maine, and finally to Exeter, New Hampshire.

Anne was gifted at many things. Always artistic, she excelled in gardening, creating floral arrangements, American crewel embroidery, hooked rugs, and creating beautiful spaces. She became an expert in weaving Nantucket baskets and she taught the craft to many people. She volunteered for numerous organizations including Art in Bloom for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, St. Peter's Episcopalian Church of Weston, The Girl Scouts, and the Jr. League. Anne was very active in fundraising for Wheelock College, where she received the distinguished service award in 2003. She was an incredible cook and hostess and provided many huge, extended family Thanksgivings over the years. Extremely gregarious, generous and athletic, she made hosting large family groups on a remote Island in Maine look easy. Anne excelled in golf, tennis and boating.

Anne will be very missed by her immediate and extended family. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy, Joanne, Janet, Susan, her grandchildren - Zach, Andrea, Rachel, Matt, Natali, Lillian, Nora, Peter, Sam, Brooklyn, Ramona, Jos, Grafton, and Frances and her great grandchildren Asa, Paloma, David, Arthur, Lyon, Lyle, Liana, Bradley, Dilan and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made in Anne Howard's name to the Wheelock College on their giving page at https://www.bu.edu/wheelock/giving/. Please write "In honor of Anne Wingle Howard" in the box for details of gift designation.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 2, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM at Boulders Hall at Riverwoods 5 Timber Lane, Exeter, NH.

I remember Ann with the best memories! She was always the kindest woman! I loved when the Howard´s would come to Vermont to ski with us! Her smile lit up the room and her laughter was contagious! I am sorry for your loss, but know she is on her eternal adventure in Heaven! Love to you all

Anne, I always loved you so much and felt particularly bonded with you. You were so generous and have provided so many wonderful memories of family gatherings. Maine, Jones Beach, countless Thanksgivings with trips to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. You were an amazing hostess and always made it look easy. I was usually intimidated to play Scrabble with you! When I was 32 and you were 51 you ran me around so hard on the tennis court I couldn´t breathe! All in fun! I miss you and hope I can hear your beautiful voice forever.

Many memories of Aunt Anne, but especially important to me were the many family Thanksgiving gatherings that she hosted. Anne always made hosting look easy and was incredibly generous with her time and talents. Her interest in gardening, cooking and crafts had an influence on my own interests. She will be greatly missed!
