He was the absolute best eye doctor ever, I started going to him at age 2 and went up till I was 17. He´s the reason my eyes were able to grow from legally blind to almost 20/20 vision. He will always be remembered and truly missed.

Where to start well it it goes I was born on August 19 1982 with my left eye completely shut and would not stay open so my mom and dad talked with the dr at the hospital and said they could with recommend at regular eye dr at Clara Mass Hospital or see an eye specialist named Dr Anthony Caputo my mom and dad said we want to see Dr. Caputo I first saw him one week later after my birth on August 26, 1982 and the Dr and the bond that would become was so special he knew exactly what was wrong with me and knew what to do to correct it! I was diagnosed with third nerve Palsey which is blind in the eye and he told my parents at the time that if I had third nerve Palsey I would have something else wrong with me and he was spot on at 9 months old I was diagnosed with Cerberal Palsey!!!! This man Dr.Caputo became such an important person in my life forever I would see him every year in early years it would be every 3 months until not needing to see him that often! When I was in the office for appointment I felt like that he was my second father he cared and loved me so much and I loved him so much that I always looked forward to my office visits!!! In August 2017 I called for an appt because it was time for a visit and was told that he passed away I completely broke down on the phone with his assistant which I knew very well over all the years when I became an adult I said to Dr Caputo well I guess I can´t see you anymore he turned to me and said why are you moving far away and I said no you only treat kids he said you have me for ever!!!! It didn´t matter if you were a scared kid or a scared adult he would always make you feel so special and so loved!!!! I miss him so much! I still can´t find a eye dr that I can trust like Dr Caputo I been through 4 eye drs since 2017 and don´t like any of them!!!! The best and only the best was Dr. Anthony R Caputo!!!! RIP Dr Caputo Take care of my mother and father up there!!!! Love you forever Dr Caputo

Dr. Caputo helped make me who I am. I was severely bullied as a smart, gentle, cross eyed kid. He changed that. Because my parents brought me to him, Dr Caputo changed my life by straightening my gaze and giving me the confidence to look my own patients in the eyes as an adult and do my best to help them heal. Rest in peace, good man. I should have come sooner to thank you, and for that, I'm sorry.

I've had the pleasure of working with Dr. Wagner, Dr. Caputo's colleague whom has always spoken very highly about Dr. Caputo. I've heard so many great stories about him and the love he had for what he did. May god bless his soul forever and his family. Even though i did not personally know you, your patient's as well as Dr. Wagner have always made sure to keep your name alive.

Dr. Caputo corrected my exotropia when I was 3 years old. In a panic I went back to him when I was 18 thinking it "reversed" and he chuckled when he saw that my eyes were still perfect. I'm 27 now with my own son who I notice is showing signs, it broke my heart to look up Dr. Caputo and see his passing. He was truly an amazing man who had a real gift. I will always appreciate him and what he did for me, and I will always think of him fondly. Peace is all this man deserves.

Dr. Caputo preformed eye surgery on me when I was 14 years old. He was recommended by my uncle, Dr. Stanley Bergen, from UMDNJ. Since my operation, I have many times thought about Dr. Caputo and how he helped me to be able to see straight forward instead of looking out of the corners of my eyes. .ay you rest in peace Dr Caputo.

As a young child I was blessed with Dr. Caputo as my gifted surgeon for 3 procedures that helped correct my lazy eye. He essentially saved my vision in that eye and so allowed my younger self to grow up confidently and uninhibited.
Today as a 30 year old fellow wrapping up his medical training I somewhat fittingly stumbled upon this sad news. Although I have not seen him in 16 years+, I was researching an eye condition and Dr. Caputo was who I immediately thought of and searched for. That was the kind of mark he made on you.
Simply put I would not be where I am today if it weren't for his remarkable dedication and kindness. Thank you Dr. Caputo. You are an inspiration and I am forever grateful.

I was shocked and stricken to learn that Dr. Caputo had passed. I was trying to get in touch with the office to schedule my son's appointment before he heads off to College. Dr. Caputo first treated my son when he was 16 months old. He was legally blind in one eye. Dr. Caputo's treatment and surgery (at 3 years ) saved Matthew's eyesight, and he has improved with each passing year. We used to joke that the Doc could write a case study in the Ophthalmology Journal about Matt. I feel so bad because of the loss to the world, but also because I didn't know he was ill. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. My husband (also an MD) used to say what a classy, good hearted man he was. We will always be grateful to him. Rest in peace doc, you are and will continue to be missed.

I met Dr. Caputo, at Clara Mass hospital. He did surgery on both of my twin daughters eyes. Not once but twice or three times. Every time we saw him he will hug and kiss us all. He always told my daughters to focus and reach the highest stars because they had a great mom. Anyway I called the office to make appointment for one of the twins and the office clerk stated he pasted away, I just cried on the phone for awhile my heart was broken and so was the office clerk. When I told the twins they said no he was coming to our graduation. Well he'll be proud they both graduated from college in 2019. One is teaching 7th grade science and the other working at Robert Woods hospital as a floater. She be leaving for Physician Asst school in 2021.. My angle in the sky is so proud loved this man Dr. Caputo. :( PS He was a gift to anyone that knew him:(

Dr. Caputo is the sole reason why I have my eyesight today. He worked tirelessly to help others, and as a kid who was forced to wear various eye patches and duct tape to correct a version of a lazy eye, there was little hope for my vision to be saved because I refused to wear anything the doctors gave me - I was bullied for it in school. When we first met with Dr. Caputo, he gave me and my family hope. We felt immediately that he was a special man. He went out of his way to figure out a new treatment option for me, and because of that, I am able to enjoy my life today - with my vision in tact. Thank you Dr. Caputo, you will always be remembered.

Dr Kaputo operated on my daughter Gianna when she was under 5 years old. He was an amazing physician and even more amazing human being. His kindness and passion toward his patients were unlike any other that I've seen. His charity work doing corrective surgery for underprivileged children in impoverished countries said much about his ability to give and never ask for praise. This man had a wonderful heart, he is irreplaceable and I hope that Gianna and I can have another visit with Anthony behind the pearly gates of heaven.

I read this with great sadness. My son was born prematurely in 1988 and was referred to Dr Caputo at age 3. It was Dr Caputo's care, compassion and skill that helped my son's eyesight allowing him to see the world it is today. Dr Caputo was amazed everytime he saw my son even into adultdhood on how his eyes kept improving. Thank you for you kindness and dedication. You will be missed.

I'm sitting at my desk with tears in my eyes. Dr. Caputo was my eye doctor since I was a small child, almost thirty years. He was also my brother's eye doctor as well. He honestly was one of the people who inspired me the most in my life. Dr. Caputo truly did care for all of his patients. I saw him at Columbus Hospital and at Clara Maass Hospital. I always looked forward to seeing him year after year.
If it wasn't for Dr. Caputo I wouldn't be where I am today.
Rest well Dr. Caputo. You have helped so many in countless ways. We will never forget you, your smile or your kind heart and soul.
Our deepest sympathathies to the Caputo family.

I was one of the high school students that Dr. Caputo taught at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1963. My name at the time was Mary Krol. A young, confused student, I took "Mr. Caputo's" General Science class. I loved being his student. He opened up a world to me that I will never forget, and on his picture in my Freshman yearbook, he wrote words of encouragement to me that have guided me my entire life. We all knew that Mr. Caputo was moving on to medical school in Italy, and I remember seeing a two-spread page in the Newark Star Ledger on his discovery of a surgical eye procedure for infants. I was so proud. But what will stand out in my memory forever was the day we all received the news of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Our History teacher, Mr. Murphy, came into our classroom crying. I was in Mr. Caputo's class at the time, and I studied him as he stared out the window, absent-mindedly pulling on the cord of the blinds on the window, deep in thought. I have thought of his reaction for decades afterwards, and I can only imagine that his mind was clicking away about the tremendous loss to our country, and all its implications. As a Freshman, I had no idea of what that assassination meant to the world, but I know now that Mr. Caputo knew. He will always be Mr. Caputo to us fortunate students in his class, and the love we had for him back then was magnified many times over by everyone he knew in his future. How could we have known what Mr. Caputo or any of us would become, but my soul is crying now for the man who gave us young girls a wonderful start in life. We thank you, Mr. Caputo....Dr. Caputo...and we miss you.

I first met Dr Caputo when my son was 3. He was wonderful at caring for him & putting me at ease. I recommended him to many when eye care was needed. My Godson did need surgery & he cared for him for 16 years. He was a blessing to many. I am sure he is enjoying his reward in Heaven.
My condolences to the family. Will keep you all in prayer.

August 23, 2018
I as so upset to hear of Dr. Caputo's passing . He took care of my premature son's eyes for 20 years. My son was born at 25 weeks and had retinopathy of premature. I was so anxious whenever I went to our eye doctor with my son because he was so distant and cold, and I was afraid. I didn't want my son, my baby, to lose his vision. Then I was referred to Dr. Caputo by a young man who did his residency under Dr. Caputo, Paul Jenkins MD. From the first moment I met Dr. Caputo he was kind and gentle with me and my son. As my son Neil grew taller then Dr. Caputo he would kiss him on the cheek at every visit or give him a hug. My first visit with Dr. Caputo my son was not 1 year old yet. My last visit with Dr. Caputo my son was 19 years old. Dr.Caputo even wrote him a reference for college. I will never forget him. His professionalism and his kindness and genuine caring was beautiful to me, and I am forever grateful to this wonderful man.

I am overwhelmed with sadness to read of Dr. Caputo's passing last year. I started as a patient in 1983 when I was 5 years old and had strabismus in both eyes with double vision that was not being medically managed. My grandparents told they had no idea what doctor to take me to, so they called the Operator at New Jersey Bell who told them Dr. Caputo is "the best doctor in Newark" and he will know what to do. How right that operator was. From 1983 until 1987, Dr. Caputo performed 3 separate surgeries on my eyes. Each time I saw Dr. Caputo he calmed my fears of the "drops", surgeries, patches, and being put under anesthesia. You never felt rushed in his office and you were cared for as if you were his own child. In 2008, at age 30, I developed a, ocular migraine and was convinced something was wrong with my eyes. I looked up Dr. Caputo and went to see him at Columbus Hospital in Newark. To my surprise after all those years, he remembered me and all the specifics of my surgeries with no record in front of him. When I asked how he remembered everything he replied that he used my record to teach other doctors at the medical school how to handle a severe case of strabismus. He looked at my eyes and concluded the muscles were fine and it was just a migraine. In 2014, I brought my 1 year old daughter to Dr. Caputo because in pictures I thought her eye was turning inwards. With great fear, my husband and I brought her to Clara Maas to see him. He assured us that she was fine and the eye only looked that way due to some skull misshaping that she was undergoing therapy for. There is no doctor in the world I would have trusted to see my child except for Dr. Caputo. The world was truly blessed to have Dr. Caputo. He changed countless lives, including my own. To me, I will always regard him as being a saint who fixed my eyesight. I know that the Lord is rewarding Dr. Caputo with a place in Heaven for all the children he helped. My sincerest condolences to the entire family.

I was so so sad to hear about the passing of Dr Caputo however I was so grateful of his help for me, but for ALL his patients over the years. I was a 32 year old adult who was never properly diagnosed and had been lucky enough to see the doctor who so many had high admiration for. The care and love he gave to me made me imagine how he was with children as well. I am forever grateful for Dr Caputo's lifetime of devotion and I wish his close family and friends the ease of pain knowing the thousands of people who he helped but they have never met

I am so sad to hear of the passing of such a wonderful doctor. I was a patient of Dr. Caputo since I was 1 year (1982) old until his passing. I am 37. I was so sad to hear of his illness and I am heartbroken to hear of his passing. He was a wonderful and special man. He always took his time with me. Dr. Caputo had patience and listened to everything we had to say. He was he only doctor who fully understood my complex eye disease. He put me at ease as a child, as a mom-to-be and as a mom of 3. He gave my mother the tools to help my vision. Dr. Caputo helped me in ways I can never repay. I always felt important and he always remembered me (and my mom). I will forever be grateful for the care, confidence, expertise and humanity I received for 36 years as his patient. Dr. Caputo will be missed. I pray his soul is resting peacefully with the angels and for peace in in his family's hearts.

Dr. Caputo helped both my sister and I when our eyes were crossed at a very young age. We both had 2 successful surgeries because of him. Every time we saw him he was like a breath of fresh air. He always made you feel important when he came in to examine you. When I had my second surgery I was shaking on the operating table. When he entered the room he gave me a sense of calmness, as if my own father was there to make sure I was okay. When I found out he passed away it broke my heart. My condolences to his family. I will never forget him, he was a wonderful, kind, and very intelligent man. I doubt I will ever encounter anyone like him again.

To the Caputo Family,
As I picked up the phone today to make an appointment for my son, who is now 22 years old and was a patient since 1996, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Caputo. My son was born with both eyes severely crossed and I was referred to Dr. Caputo when he was a few months old. My son had two very successful surgeries and went on to eventually not have to even wear glasses. Dr. Caputo saved his vision, and when my son would come in for appointments, you could tell how proud he was and what a success story this was. Ours is but one of thousands of success stories that Dr. Caputo accomplished as you could see when visiting his office with pictures of all the children he helped over the years. He will be truly missed but his legacy lives on in those he has changed with the gift of vision. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.
Sincerely,
Lynette and Chad Pearson (my son)
Thank you, Dr. Caputo, for being so loving and patient with us. This would have been the 6th grade pic Layla was going to send you this year.

To the Patients, Friends, and Family who left comments on this Obituary-
I would like to start this message by saying thank you. Thank you for your condolences, stories, memories, and prayers in this time of grief; the likes of which I have never felt before. Reading your countless messages has been among the most bittersweet of my experiences. Bitter in the sense that my grandfather is no longer with us, sweet because I now realize that he has touched so many of you in the same way he touched me these past eighteen years. My Pop was larger than life to me, someone with all of the answers. He provided more guidance to me than imaginable and led by example with his tireless work ethic.
I have found great catharsis in reading all of your kind words and I cannot express enough gratitude to all of you who mourned with my family. The wounds are still sore yet reading your words help bring a part of him back to life.
My world will never be the same now that my Man is gone. This is inevitable. But the values instilled in me by my Pop coupled with the legacy he has left behind have given me the tools necessary to take the next steps in my life. If I am able to impact a fraction of the people he did, I will be content with my work.
Again, thank you all for taking the time out of your day to share your words - especially those I have never met before.
God Bless.

I never knew Dr. Caputo his partner Rudy Wagner had attended to my daughters eye surgery many years ago. What I did know of the man wa his big heart for the disadvantaged and his Orbis duty. Attending to the underpriviliged in third world countries for optomoligic needs. In addition his love of Thoroughbreds show the type of man he was. My condolences to his family. Blessings to you Sir, may St Anthony lead you to the heavens...

I just googled Dr. Caputo's name and read of his passing. I am extremely sad to hear this. We met Dr. Caputo in 1997, when my son needed glasses and we were lucky enough to get an appointment. He talked with us about Orbis International and suggested that one day, we join his team in the September or May trips. I will always remember Dr. Caputo saying to us, "I can promise you one thing if you come on an Orbis trip; you will never go just once. You will love it so much, you'll want to keep going." He told us that once we had time to go, he would help us become approved as volunteers. Well, that is just why I googled him, I am interested in going on an Orbis trip. :( Dr. Caputo also regularly told us how much he loved his daughters. Our sons went to SHP also and one played football. Dr. Caputo was so excited to talk about SHP and spoke so highly of Msgr. Kelly. He was a one of a kind, special, sincere, warm, considerate and brilliant man. He is, without doubt, an angel in heaven. -Jill Stewart

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Caputo passing. I have been a patient of his since 1979. He was an extraordinary man, who spent many hours diagnosing and treating my eyes. He was always supportive and genuine to my mother when she would bring me in as a small child to his office in Jersey City. He performed 2 surgeries on my eyes the first in 1980 and the second in 1992. I would still go back every other year to get a check up and actually looked forward to seeing him. I would always want to share my accomplishments with him so he knew how much of a difference he made in my life from seeing better, to baseball, basketball, and shooting in the academy. He was such a big part of my life as a child, teenager, and adult. I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to his wife, daughters and family. As I stated earlier he was an extraordinary man. I hope you find some comfort in knowing he impacted the lives of so many children and their families.

I was a patient of Dr. Caputo since I was child, now 31. He was the only doctor I whole heartedly trusted. Having eye problems at at early age, my parents took me to see him and I am sure within minutes they knew he was the doctor they needed. He truly made you feel safe when in his office, which was filled wall to wall with thank you letters and photos of his numerous patients. Being wheeled into an operating room is scary enough for an adult, for children it is even more so. But as soon as you saw Dr. Caputo as he held your hand and counted down with you, you felt at ease. Visiting his office was the rare instance where I was actually excited to see a doctor, because he was not only a tremendous MD, but was also a dear friend to thousands of patients.
God bless you and your family!

We first met Dr. Caputo when Layla was 2 years old. I'll never forget his soft spoken tone and sincere concern for my daughter. Layla would have been considered legally blind in her left eye. Her eye crossed over and she couldn't see. Though she was 2 years old, she took to Dr. Caputo instantly, where with her pediatrician, she did not. Through the years, Layla's eye became stronger, from 200/20, to 25/20 with eye glasses. Dr. Caputo always praised Layla for her hard work from keeping her glasses on at 2 years old to wearing her eye patch, which she did not like. But somehow, Dr. Caputo worked his magic on her and Layla wore that patch for the length of time prescribed. He praised me for being a wonderful mother when I didn't think I was. Dr. Caputo was a special doctor. I don't think I have ever met anyone as sweet natured, loving, and caring for his patients as he was. Every year, Layla sent him a school pic of herself and at every visit, he would point to her pic and say, "There you are." Layla is 11 years old now. We saw him last in May 2017 and looked forward to seeing him again. My heart breaks for his family as he was such a loving person. I want to thank you, Dr. Caputo, for everything you have done for Layla. Because of you, I have learned--am trying--to speak softer to her, understand her more, and become more patient, as you were with her. May God Bless you always. Thank you for everything.
Respectfully,

I was absolutely devastated to be told today that Dr. Caputo passed. When I called in July I was told Dr. Caputo had retired. After 28 years of care for my daughter Allison I was distraught but commented that such a wonderful man deserved a blessed retirement. At our new Ophthalmologist's office today I was advised that he had passed. Allie and I were brought to tears. Along with so many others who were blessed to be treated by wonderful Dr. Caputo I am at a loss for words. Your husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend was an amazing man. There is no doubt that he was welcomed into eternity with the words "Welcome my good and faithful servant". My heart aches for you. May God bless you always and may the soul of Dr. Caputo rest peacefully in the arms of our Lord.

I am so upset that this amazing man passed so quickly. it upsets my family's heart dearly. If it wasn't for him, my daughter, Kathryn, wouldn't be able to see from age 1. Now she's 13 with a bright life ahead of her all because of my coworker/friend that I hope lived a happy life. Thank you for everything. We miss you.

I too just found out about Dr. Caputo's passing. My son Christopher has been a patient of this wonderful doctor and person since he was eight days old. Now 26 my son is photographer major at an art school in Portland, OR., in-spite of his vision issue. I had to tell my son and he feels like he lost a friend. Dear Dr. Caputo, we will miss you and thank you for your wonderful support and care for my son.

I am so sorry to recently hear of Tony's passing. I grew up a patient of Dr. Caputo and when as a mother I needed help with my young daughter, Pauline insisted Tony could help. She was right, of course. I can feel to this day the compassion I received from Tony, never minimizing my worries and with his calm way he helped me feel better and helped my daughter get well. His diagnosis of strabismus was the answer to months of questions. I think back with great fondness on my time around the Caputo boys. It has been my distinct honor to have known Dr. Tony Caputo.

I just found out after Dr. Caputo's Passing today. After being called to tell me my appointment was cancelled ( I was very much looking forward to seeing him again!) I have been searching to see what happened. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was my doctor since I was born in 1989, and gave me the gift of sight after being born with retinopathy of prematurity due to being born at 23 weeks. He was such a loving, caring soul. I am so sad about his passing, it truly breaks my heart. He was such a wonderful man and doctor. I only wish I was able to give him a proper goodbye. I will carry his memory in my heart forever. He was more than just my doctor, he was my cheerleader, confidant and friend. I feel very blessed to have known him. My deepest condolences to his Family and Friends. Rest In Peace Dr. Caputo!

I'm so unbelievably heartbroken right now. I've been going to Dr. Caputo since I was two years old and now I'm a junior in college. He saved my eye and has done everything in his power to help/support my family. I always knew I was in good hands every time I went to his office and looked forward to our yearly visits. He was like family to us. There has never been a doctor more supporting, caring, and generous. He was an incredible doctor with the kindest heart. I'm so thankful for him taking me in with open arms and constantly reassuring my family that everything will be okay. I love and miss you so much, Dr. Caputo. Rest in peace.

I just learned of Dr. Caputo's passing. I received a call in early July that he was retiring and my daughters appointment was canceled. My husband and I couldn't believe it. He performed ptosis surgery on her when she was barely two. I have never met a more loving, caring doctor than Dr. Caputo. He always made us feel like family. We will miss him terribly. Dr. Caputo, I will always pray to St. Lucy just as you did. As far as I'm concerned, you were a Saint here on earth and I know you are in Heaven with God. Words cannot express th sadness we feel that you are not here with us. Rest In Peace we will love you always.

Our daughter, Melissa was only six weeks old in 1984. Her eyes were constantly moving and the three eye doctors we were referred to gave us a grim prognosis.....until we met Dr. Caputo! He was supportive, empathetic and encouraging. He diagnosed her with ocular albinism and he implored us not to treat her differently, but to love her like any other child. He monitored her yearly since then. Each year, he welcomed her with open arms, hugging her and eager to display her updated pictures and artwork on the "wall". He was even able to point out her older pictures, pinpointing the exact spot from hundreds of pictures. Melissa felt like he was more than her doctor.....he was her friend and cheerleader! Melissa is now 33 years old. She is a Vice President for a big firm and never let her visual impairment define her or limit her in any way, which is what Dr. Caputo always instilled in her. Melissa was looking forward to making her annual appointment, having last seen Dr. Caputo a year prior. Then she heard the sad news about his passing and immediately called me. We are all shocked and devastated at the loss of a wonderful doctor, but more importantly, a wonderful man!!! We will all miss him dearly and pray that his family will take comfort in the fact that he touched so many lives.

Dr. Caputo touched the lives of so many, and was a true inspiration and most special mentor to so many (myself included).
I feel blessed to have known Dr. Caputo; my mother Karin was his orthoptist, so for most of my life I routinely heard of his patient care successes and philanthropic activities. My life truly changed when I worked for him for two summers screening his patients, and then later when he inspired me to pursue a subspecialty in Pediatric Ophthalmology--I could not be happier, and will be forever grateful for his guidance.
Dr. Caputo was a Great Man, a most gifted and wise Doctor and Surgeon, a most invested Teacher--all heightened by his genuine kindness and caring. I think of him often when examining patients, will forever treasure his precious words of wisdom, and will always remember his warm and smiling eyes.
My warmest thoughts and prayers are with his family,

Dr. Caputo was my dear mentor, my source of guidance, and my employer for 38 years. His passing has left a great void, beyond words. I write this with a weeping heart, filled with great pain--all expressions of my deep respect, admiration, and love for Dr. Caputo.
Working for Dr. Caputo, I witnessed the love he had for each and every one of his patients, and the many miracles he performed for them. He was totally committed to solving their medical problems, and always found the answer; he was a most gifted physician.
He filled the room with warmth, and his patients and their parents were completely at ease, and trusted him. He was most generous with his time, and a great listener... giving his support and advice, a warm embrace, or whatever was needed. He was an exceptional physician, incredibly kind and compassionate, gentle and caring, warm and loving.
Dr. Caputo never took a day off from work, whether tired or sick, and he never complained; he simply wanted to be there for his patients. I think of his dearest wife Cathy, his beautiful daughters Karen, Kit, and Kerry, his son-in-laws, and his lovely grandchildren--Dr. Caputo's heart was big, and they all had the most special place in it.
It has been a true honor and privilege to have worked for Dr. Caputo. I am deeply grateful and will treasure Dr. Caputo's memory forever in my heart.
Dear Cathy, my love and prayers are with you, Karen, Kit, and Kerry, and your whole dear family,
With deepest and most heartfelt sympathy,

Our entire family is still so saddened to hear the news about Dr Caputo. Dr Caputo has been our daughter's eye doctor since she was 5 years old & she will be 38 in December. He made Chrissie feel like she was his only patient and truly was the BEST doctor we have ever encountered in our lifetime. Believe me we have met many doctors in all these years. Every visit he made Chrissie feel like she was #1. He posted all her poetry, writings, resumes and other news articles about her on his infamous "wall". Chrissie has ptosis (where her eyelids do not stay open) and he assisted us in finding a doctor who created a lid crutch on her eye frame to keep her eye open. On our last visit 5/18/17, Dr Caputo was so excited that we had just returned from London (where Chrissie's sister lives) & Ireland. He wanted to hear all about our trip & took the name of the Irish bus tour that we took. He shared that he wanted so much to travel and he sounded like he was on his way to really look into it. This world will definitely miss an amazing person. When he was created, God made an angel as he has touched so many lives in his short lifetime. God Bless Mrs Caputo, Karen, Kit & Kerry and their families. Please know that we all are honored to have had known him in our lifetime. The Cluney Family--Clifton, NJ

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Caputo's passing. I was a patient of Dr. Caputo's for 24 years, from the age of 8 days old. I was born with a cataract in my right eye and Dr. Caputo performed multiple surgeries on me throughout my life. Every time that I came for a check up, Dr. Caputo would open the door and give me a huge hug and call me his "baby", even at the age of 23 when I last saw him. He fixed my eye so well that almost anyone that I tell about my eye condition is unaware that there was ever anything wrong. Dr. Caputo was truly an amazing doctor and person and he is irreplaceable. I will miss him very much.

Wow no words left. Our first time at Dr. Capputo was 13 years ago when my Daugher was under 6 monthes of age. Because of him she can see, so we truly owe him everything for giving my Daughter her eyesight. Will never forget at 11 monthes he preformed the surgery and I was so scared and nervous when they took her to the operating room. He saw how nervous I was, he came out and said to me I never usually come out we take your child to recovery and then someone comes to get you, but I saw how upset you were so wanted to come out and insure you everything was great he hugged me and took me to recovery. That is just when I truly got to know him not just as a Dr but someone who treats each and every patient as if they were his own Child!!! He always told us " This is my baby" since he treated her at such young age! That is one person that is Unreplaceable. We will miss him so very much!

I am heartbroken to learn of Dr. Caputo's passing, and will forever be grateful that my son was fortunate enough to have been treated by such a fine doctor, who was also an exceptional human being. My son had strabismus and was legally blind in one eye, and was treated by Dr. Caputo from the time he was 2 years old until the last time we saw him when my son was 17. With Dr. Caputo's expert care my son's vision is now 20/30 without glasses, and the corrective surgery left his eyes perfectly straight. My son is now 21 years old and is entering his senior year in college, and I've always felt that Dr. Caputo was the most instrumental non-family member in my son's life, giving him better vision and straight eyes so he could go through life without the burden he was born with. And I wish I'd known that Dr. Caputo was a St. Bonaventure alum, since I am too. I would have loved to hear about his days at St. Bonaventure University and can see that he lived the Franciscan values of knowledge and love, in his service to all of his patients throughout his life. I will pray that he is ar peace, and will always remember the enormous impact he had on my son's life.

August 2, 2017
Dear Mrs. Caputo and Family,
My name is Michelina Giuliano and Family. We are in tears as we are writing this-we can't stop our crying due to our love for Dr. Caputo-he was family to us-his death hurts as we lost a member of our family. My entire family knew Dr. Caputo for years and years. I was Dr. Caputo's patient ever since I was born since 1979. My family and I are so so devastated-we just found out last night that your husband, Dr. Caputo had passed away. If somoene had called us to tell us, we would have definitely come to the Funeral Mass, but I only found out last night. Dr. Caputo was always there for me and my mom-we were both his patients and also for my brother, Carmine Anthony Giuliano, years ago when he saw Dr. Caputo. My parents say that when Dr. Caputo did the eye surgery on me for my cross-eyes, Dr. Caputo held on to my mom and to me so tight as a sign that the surgery would be a success-your husband, Dr. Caputo was so so devoted to Saint Lucy and to Our Lady of Lourdes just like me and my family-he blessed my mom and me with the Lourdes Healing water-you can't find any doctor who would do this for his patients-Dr. Caputo treated all of his patients with the same love and generosity and open heart just as a father loves his children-all of Dr. Caputo's patients were his children and Dr. Caputo was a father to me and to all of his patients.
Dr. Caputo saved my eyes years ago in 1988 when I was cross-eyed and he saved my eyes two years ago I could have went blind in my eyes due to the herpes simplex virus in my right eye and if it hadnt been for Betty who asked Dr. Caputo right away when I explained to her that I had a sharp, stabbing pain in my right eye and Dr. Caputo said to come first thing the next morning as I was working until 4pm that night, and Dr. Caputo healed me of the herpes simplex virus in the cornea of my right eye, together with our devotion to Saint Lucy and Saint Odilia, patroness of the eyes. Dr. Caputo gave me the right medications to treat the herpes simplex virus and to get rid of it completely. Dr. Caputo was the BEST EYE DOCTOR IN THE WORLD, just as I wrote in my card to him after he did the eye surgety on me in 1987-I was only eight years old when I made that card for Dr. Caputo-and he always kept that card above his sink in his Roseland Office with the red, white, and blue letters as I was born on July 04th-Dr. Caputo always said that was the best card he had ever recceived. From the first time I met Dr. Caputo after my baby years, my family and I loved him as a father. When I saw Dr. Caputo this year for the last time, he didn't seem himself-I had made a plaque for his birthday in May, and he didn't appear the same-I asked him how he was feeling but he said ok, how are you Michelina. He always gave the best advice about anything I was going through-school, work, relationships, anything-he was the best listener and gave the best advice that you would never forget his wisdom.
My family and I can't get ourselves to realize that he is no longer here-I would tell Dr. Caputo that he was a Saint and he truly is a Saint-he went straight to Heaven-he never refused anyone-he was always there for everyone and I can just hear Our Lord saying to Dr. Caputo, "Well done, my dear and faithful servant, enter into the Heavenly kingdom." Rest in Heavenly peace Dr. Caputo-my family and I miss you so so much-no one can ever replace you and we will never ever forget you.
Mrs. Caputo, my family and I will send a Mass Card for your husband as soon as I have the chance to go to Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South Orange, I will have the Rectory send you the Mass. I am here if you ever need to call me my cell phone number is
973-809-1616. We are so so sorry for your loss. Dr. Caputo was still so young and he could have lived so many more years on this Earth-we sometimes don't understand God's reasons but God gained the Best of the Best in Heaven on July 24, 2017-and Dr. Caputo's birthday was on May 24, 2017-the same number 24. My family and I love you so much, Dr. Caputo, and we will pray for the repose of your soul-please pray for us from Heaven that the herpes simplex virus never attacks me ever again and that my family and I are always in good health with our eyes and everything else.
I have attached a picture of me and Dr. Caputo which was taken two years ago, after I was completely healed by the herpes simplex virus thanks to Saint Lucy and Saint Odilia and Dr. Caputo.
Love Always,

Dear Mrs.Caputo and Family,
I am devastated to learn only today of the passing of Dr. Caputo. Words alone cannot describe how truly special this man was not only to us, but to everyone he met. My son Jack always looked forward to our visits with Dr. Caputo, thanks to his warm, Papa Bear demeanor and welcoming smile. We are forever indebted to him from that first visit when he told us that all would be ok with our son's eyes to the surgery, where I cried and he held my hand and hugged me through it as long as it took. He was like a father and grandfather to me, my husband and son, offering us that emotional support that we needed to get through the surgery. There is no doctor that I have ever felt this way about, and I can't believe that he is no longer here. He was one-of-a-kind.
We would often talk about Nantucket and his love for the island, and being there with his children and grandchildren. We were always shy to stop by when we were on island, but Dr. Caputo always told us we had an open invitation, and we vowed back in February, at my son's last appointment with him, that this summer we would definitely visit. When we received his retirement notice, I told my husband we were definitely going to stop by and share a drink on the porch with him, as he told us that's where he'd often be. I remember thinking, not knowing about the illness, that he would finally get a summer to relax and spend time up there without the summer weekend commute. Sadly, my biggest regret is that we never stopped by other summers, because I know he would have welcomed us with open arms and it would have been a memory that we would have cherished for years.
We will never, ever forget Dr. Caputo and what an indelible mark he made on us and our son. We are grateful that we knew him for the time that we did. He was the most exceptional man, a true angel on this earth. Our hearts go out to you and your daughters, your son-in-laws and beautiful grandchildren. May his legacy live through all of them.

Our son was several months old when we were referred to Dr. Caputo with what was a poor prognosis with regard to our sons visual health. I remember like it was yesterday my wife holding our baby as Dr. Caputo conducted his examination with confidence, humor and compassion. Dr. Caputo remained the caring, honest, insight caregiver throughout the 26 years that he took care of our son. Today, Michael has a shown extraordinary visual improvement and functions as a productive member of the community. It was heart breaking to learn of Dr. Caputo's passing when the office called to cancel the October appointment. Heaven is now blessed with a dedicated physician and a wonderful man. God bless Anthony R. Caputo. Immerman Family, Chatham, NJ

Dr Caputo was the angel sent from heaven to my daughter, Cara Rubino Zibbell. She was his first private patient after returning to New Jersey to begin his practice. We saw him frequently in the early years and held on to his words,as we believed he was our personal angel. I am so saddened to hear of his passing and I know he is in a special place with God. My deepest condolences to his family. We will keep you in our prayers. Godspeed,Dr Caputo. We loved you and thank you!!!!!

He called me his "first patient" in his private practice - I was never sure if Dr. Caputo just said that to make me special though. He always made me feel that way. Even with my crooked, crossed eyes, patches and foggy lenses, he always made me feel like a little lady sitting across from him in his big chair with his shining light. I always felt like his prize. The truth is,he was mine. As I write this in tears, it is mostly for the loss of a talented humanitarian, loving friend and proud family man. For giving my parents hope, now most appreciated as a parent myself, when they didn't have it. For their daughter to see the world and to be seen for for her beauty, inside and OUT. Dr Caputo, you will always have a special place in my heart. Love - Cara Rubino

My family and I are so saddened by the loss of Dr. Caputo. He was always very happy and enjoyed talking with us. He always took excellent care of both my boys who are now 20 and 21 years old. When my younger son was 1 1/2 years old Dr. Caputo did surgery to correct a blocked tear duct. After the surgery my son Joseph never had that problem again. He always treated us with kindness. He was always honest. No one could ever fill his shoes. So sorry we were unable to see him before he passed. Our prayers are with your family. Marietta, Danny, Kevin & Joseph Sommer

We are completely heartbroken to hear this sad news about our beloved Dr. Caputo. He was an exceptional doctor and person. We will always remember his warm smile, calming reassurance, and patient explanations of my son's test results. Dr. Caputo was THE expert and we will forever be grateful that my son's eyesight was in his hands. Every appointment was like visiting with a favorite friend.
We want to send our sincerest condolences to his family. What an amazing man.
