Anthony Cipriano Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register from May 26 to May 27, 2012.
CIPRIANO, ANTHONY P., M.D. A pillar of the New Haven medical community since 1948, Anthony P. Cipriano, M.D. of Branford died at age 96 on May 25th, at his home, surrounded by his wife of 69 years, Marguerite Della Selva Cipriano, his four children and their spouses. He was born in New Haven, the second youngest of ten children to Giuseppina Conte Cipriano and Genoeffo Cipriano. From a musical family that launched the career of music icon, Rudy Vallee, Dr. Cipriano first studied piano at an early age and continued to play well into his 80s. Dr. Cipriano earned his undergraduate degree at Yale University and his medical degree at Downstate Medical School of New York. His house staff training in Internal Medicine was at the Grace Hospital, New Haven. He served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Medical Corps during WWII. Dr. Cipriano was attached to the 16th General Hospital which landed at Normandy Beach during the D-Day invasion and moved with the war across Europe. He witnessed the liberation of Paris and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. While he distinguished himself as a pianist and in his military career, he took greatest pride and satisfaction in his role as a physician. Upon his return to New Haven and completion of his medical training, he opened his practice on Orange Street where he practiced for 22 years as one of the first specialists in Internal Medicine. In 1969 he completed a residency in Dermatology at Yale and practiced Dermatology in New Haven and East Haven until his retirement in 2003 at the age of 87. An avid instructor, he was Clinical Professor at the Yale Medical School, and Professor Emeritus upon retirement. He was beloved by his patients and he was sought after by physicians for his diagnostic acumen. He was a long-time member of the New Haven Medical Society, and the Amity and Pine Orchard Clubs. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughters, Mary-Jo (John) Amatruda and Diane (Randy) Graham, sons, Anthony, Jr. (Leslie), and Francis (Nichole), and by 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by several brothers and sisters. He leaves a legacy of commitment to family, service to others, humility, and generosity, and a love of and excellence in Medicine. Friends may call on TUESDAY from 4 to 7 pm at MARESCA & SONS FUNERAL HOME 592 Chapel St. New Haven and are invited to go directly to St. Mary's Church, Branford for a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers suggested donations: The Amity Charitable Trust (P.O. Box 4129 Yalesville, CT 06492), CT Hospice, The Soup Kitchen, or St Mary's Church all of Branford. Offer condolences at www.marescafuneralhome.com

Tony was truly a "Doctor's Doctor" of the first order, as a remarkably astute and devoted physician and colleague. His example was instrumental in my choice of Dermatology as a specialty. The Yale Department of Dermatology will miss him greatly.

I am so saddened to learn of Dr c's passing He was a wonderful man. I was a patient of his all the years he practiced Dermatology. I had some unusual and difficult skin problems which he helped me manage and get rid of. My sincere condolences to all his family members. How proud you must be to have had him. He did so much for his country and mankind in general. He made me feel like his friend rather than his patient.

What a privilege it was to sit with Tony every Wednesday morning, for years, at the Yale Department of Dermatology weekly Grand Rounds. His deep knowledge and experience were matched by his warmth and humility. I had so much respect for him, and was very fond of him. I extend my sincere condolences to his family. My thoughts and prayers are with him and with you.
