Mr Diede was the first teacher I got in trouble with but also one who listened and pushed me to find my voice. I feel lucky that I got to learn from both the Diedes - history in what people did, the impact it had, the problems faced, but also how humanity has many stories with different narratives and endless possibilities. May the Diedes take comfort in knowing how much Mr. Diede was admired as a teacher and role model to myself and many others.

Mr. Diede was a phenomenal educator indeed. Both Alice and Ellie have often talked about the fun they had learning with Mr. Diede. He inspired his students and left an indelible mark on their young minds. His passion and compassion were unparalleled. We will forever remember his kindness, dedication, and enthusiasm. Please accept our family´s most sincere and deepest condolences. May he rest in peace.

We met Tony at Dhahran Middle School in Saudi Arabia. We got to witness his passion for teaching and connecting with his students and knew when our daughters, Caroline and Kathleen, got to middle school they had to have him in 8th grade and several years later they did. Tony you will be missed by so many.
Much love to the whole family,

No amount of words can describe the impact Mr. Diede had on so many Aramcons lives. His passion lit up the entire class room and everyone wanted to have him as a teacher (and I mean everyone). Like many, I had the honor of having Mr. Diede as a teacher. Mr. Diede lives in our fondest memories - just the other day I found an old CD labeled "Ghost Dance".
I loved his classes so much that I took any extra curricular class he offered.
His love for story telling, history, people and cultures left a permanent mark on me and had a huge influence on my university studies years after graduating from Aramco. To this day, he will always be one of my favorite teachers.
I had the privilege of knowing him as a Dad through Gretchen. And a really good Dad at that. He loved his family so much.
Mr. Diede was the best of them. And his impact will last lifetimes. We are so incredibly lucky to see him through Gretchen, Meghan and the little ones Anam said it best - thank you for sharing your dad with so many of us.
Sending you all of the supportive and love just like your Dad did with so many of us.

We are so thankful for the close friendship we have had with Tony and Kathryn, Meghan and Gretchen that started during our early years in Saudi Arabia and and has continued in spite of the challenging days that Tony has been through more recently.
Some of our favorite memories of Tony revolve around traveling together: Tony and Kathryn buzzing by us on the causeway to Bahrain on the way to Starbucks for a mocha coffee and then spending the day together, driving to the Qatar Open Tennis Tournament to watch the tennis stars play up close, our families staying together on the beach in Zanzibar and trying to get the perfect picture of the kids playing frisbee in the surf, and then more recently camping with our trailers through Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.
The quality that Tony shared with us that stands out most of all, was the way he cared for other people and had fun doing it! On our camping trips, he put together fly fishing equipment and waders for all of us and then spent hours tying flies (lures/hooks), teaching us how to cast, and occasionally helping retrieve our lines when they were hopelessly hooked on underwater logs. He lived out his faith in Jesus every day in the way he treated the people around him, and he loved all of us so well! We will miss him dearly and he will always live on in our hearts, particularly when we are planning that next trip and wonder what Tony would have to say about it. Through our tears we say thank you Tony for the blessing you have been to each of us!

Over the years I've often remembered my 8th grade history teacher Mr. Diede from 2002! He was the best teacher. Full of energy and laughter and light. He also played basketball with my Dad! He will be missed. Sending prayers for peace and comfort to his family. The day you reunite will be joyous!

Mr. Diede was my 8th grade US History teacher in 2003, and he coached us in basketball as well. He was much better than any of us at basketball. I'll always remember his positive attitude and smile. Rest in Peace.

At the Dhahran School, I admired Tony´s creativity in the classroom, enthusiasm for learning, and his friendly, positive attitude. He was truly a gifted teacher. My heart is saddened by your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you. May the memories of Tony and the love of family surround you and give you peace and strength in the days ahead. God's grace and peace be with you.

I met Tony at a very young age as our parents were friends and we attended the same church.
He was smart and excelled at most everything he put his mind to. Destined to be a difference maker, I would say he lived his life to be: Thoughtful/Kind, Educated/Prepared, Athlete/Coach, Teacher/Advisor, Brother/Friend, Husband/Partner, Father/Grandfather, Mentor/Role Model. Very few people can claim all of these attributes.
I believe God has a plan for all of us, but at times like these, It sure can be confusing!
My thoughts and prayers are with you Kathryn, and the entire Diede family. Dann

I met Tony while working as a teacher at the Aramco School in Dhahran. He and I were on the same team for 11 years. His love of life, his positive attitude, and his passion for teaching were well known. The students loved his class, and they loved him. The Ghost Dance project, and other reenactments brought US history to life. As a friend, Tony was a good listener, an encourager, and always willing to take time to talk.
One fun memory is how Tony enjoyed wearing white pants, and was the only male staff member to do so. Just for fun the team of 8th grade teachers made a white pants day to join him! The world was better with Tony. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

We met Tony at Aramco orientation in Houston before moving to Saudi Arabia. His love of teaching, travel and life in general was infectious! Our 2 boys that had him as a teacher both say he was the best teacher they ever had. We spent several Thanksgiving dinners together, hunted for sand roses and he even took us shopping for our first oriental rug.
Tony was always upbeat and positive. He always treated his students, players and colleagues with respect. He was passionate about playing basketball and golf, but never let the things he enjoyed interfere with time with his wife and family.
We will miss you Tony, but the memories we shared will live on in our hearts.

Deepest sympathies to Kathryn and family. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Tony’s passing. Since Tony was a year behind me in school, I didn’t know him as well as some, but our parents were good friends and Tony was also a good friend of my sister, so I still interacted with him a fair amount. As mentioned by others, he was not only a good athlete, but just a genuine, honest and stand-up guy. As I skim through the guestbook I can see he was a great teacher and impacted many lives and have no doubt he was a great husband, father and grandfather. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My connection to Tony is in the context of Dhahran School. He was a principal's dream to have on staff and an 'impact player.' Without exception, he always championed what was best for students even if it meant more work and inconvenience for teachers. His retirement left a big hole because he was a pillar of the school's student-centered culture and the respect accorded him by colleagues brought them along. The memories left here by many of his students illustrate the magnitude of his impact. He seemed to lived that adage, "get paid to do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." Consequently, his affect on others is enduring.
Kathryn, Meghan, and Gretchen, I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please accept my condolences. It was a blessing to work with Tony and I'm forever grateful for the ways he made Dhahran School a better place for both children and adults during the time our paths crossed.

Mr. Diede was an incredible educator who left a lasting impact on my life. I´ll never forget the day he taught me how to properly shoot a basketball - a lesson that shaped not only my game but also my approach to sports in general. His energy, passion, and kindness made him unforgettable. My deepest condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Diede brought historical events to life in a way that helped me appreciate that those events involved real human beings who lived lives that we can all relate to in some way. His classroom wasn't just a place for memorizing dates and names and places. He taught the through-line between the past and the present, which can easily be lost when you're a nerdy kid who just wants to earn the grade. I feel blessed to have been his student. I always walked into his classroom excited for his lessons and left feeling like I knew more than I did when I entered. I strive to approach my work as a lawyer with the same passion and energy that he brought to his teaching, because he taught that, too - enthusiasm.

North Dakota lost one of the "best of us" on September 18, 2024. Tony Diede officially became my friend in the fall of 1972. We developed this friendshp around practices planned y our elementary football and basketball coaches. Tony was always the ideal athlete I worked to emmulate. He was a good athlete with exceptional hand-eye coordination and, a seldom attained by others, work ethic. He seemed to understand at a young age that great conditioning usually defeats raw talent. A lesson I'm sure he shared with his athletes over the years. Tony was a strong man with strong Christian morals. He didn't drink or swear and was held in high esteem by his classmates, especially the girls, but his focus seldom wavered from God, family and athletics. His friendship certainly made me a better man. Something I have shared with my children and students over the years. By around the late 1970's I did begin to fear that Tony would remain a single man throughout his life. I believe Kathryn must have implemented rule # 7 in "How to Catch a Man" to trick Tony into fixing something she ripped out of her car. She may even have been the one who initially asked him out...which began a wonderful partnership I observed though the years. God did indeed create them for each other. As I remember many blessed moments through the years it typically brings a fleeting smile to my face and heart. You will be missed my old friend, but the memories will hopefully remain clear. Jodi and I reflected that we imagine that when Tony saw Jesus for the first time Jesus looked upon Tony and stated with love, "Well done my good and faithful servant!" Hopefully my memories of you,Tony, remain clear and each time I think about you I shall say a prayer for you and your family. With love, respect, and sorrow: Matt and Jodi Lokemoen

I had developed a friendship with Tony from High School through College. We played basketball, golf, softball, tennis and hunted together. Being a novice at Tennis, Tony encouraged me and showed great patience that lead me to play tennis in college. I regret not taking him up with an offer between the semesters of our senior year in college for the Interim Program to Myrtle Beach to " Research " and submit a paper on the history of golf.
Although we didn´t stay in touch after college, from the postings of family, friends and his students, it was clearly a Life Well Lived.

Tony was an amazing person and a highly talented teacher who made a positive and significant difference in the lives of countless students. His contagious passion for teaching was driven by his intense love, respect and concern for his students and their well-being. He cared deeply toward his
students and it was manifested daily in his thoughtful and purposeful interactions with them. It was always a joy to walk into his classroom and see him engaging, encouraging, challenging and motivating his students to learn and succeed. He was truly a gifted educator who modeled positive energy, optimism, perseverance and a `can do´ attitude for his students and his colleagues. I will always remember Tony as a person who made a powerful and lasting difference in the lives of others. We wish for Katherine, Gretchen and Meghan support during this challenging time. It is comforting to know that they have many wonderful friends who love them and will provide support. Nancy and I feel fortunate to have known Tony and feel that our lives have been blessed and enriched tremendously through our interactions with him as a friend, neighbor and colleague. He was truly an inspiration for all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.

Tony was the first friend I ever made in the first grade at Roosevelt Elementary School. We walked home together, it seemed, nearly every day thereafter. We shot thousands of baskets on his driveway and mine. We played baseball and later made a great doubles partnership on the tennis team at Jamestown College. We grew up together, sharing the heartaches and triumphs of youth and early manhood. Tony was such a talented athlete, but he was also the most decent person I have ever known.
The last time I saw Tony was in Boston, fitting, perhaps, as our best youth baseball team was called "the Red Sox." Tony was on his honeymoon, and I had never seen him so happy. He was over the moon in love with his beautiful new bride, and the wide world was just beginning to open up for him.
That long ago day in Massachusetts I said goodbye to Tony and Kathryn as they moved slowly down the track on a Green Line trolley car to pursue a life neither one of us could have imagined on the rough and ragged playground of Roosevelt Elementary.
Now, through tears, I say goodbye to you once more, dear Tony, first friend, never to be forgotten.

Mr. Diede was my favorite history teacher. It has been 8 years and I still remember his fun lessons and passion for teaching his students history. I always had a smile on my face during his class. Whenever I would see him I would say "Hi Mr. Diede, it's your favorite student!" and he would always have a fun reply. He was also the best golf coach anyone could ever ask for. I definitely would not have enjoyed and pursued golf if it was not for him. He also let my friends and I drive the golf cart around and we still talk about the fun times in his class and during golf tournaments. These are memories I will never forget.
Rest in peace Mr. Diede

I remember walking into my first Social Studies meeting at Dhahran School in August of 2004 and hearing Tony laugh. He was one of those people who has a gift for making those around him feel good. He had a great sense of humour and laugh.
He loved his job, his students, and history, particularly U.S. history, and his students loved every minute of his classes. As I used to say jokingly, I never could find anyone who would say a bad thing about him-and I tried! :)
Kathryn, Meghan, and Gretchen, Bill and I are still very sorry, and send our warmest condolences and hugs from across the miles. We hope that being with family and friends at this very difficult time will bring you strength, as well as the knowledge that Tony´s memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Many condolences to Kathryn and the girls from our family. Tony taught my daughters social studies at Dhahran Middle School and they both said he was the best teacher they have ever had. They loved how he taught them to love learning by immersing them in history; recreating Ghost Dances, Civil war scenarios and taught them about democracy. Such an important connection for expatriate Amercian kids and now his impact travels on through the generations. Rest well Tony.

Mr. Diede was the kind of teacher you never forget. He had such a caring and passionate way of teaching, and he made history come alive in a way that made me actually love learning. His class was the highlight of my entire school experience. Now that I´m a teacher, I realize there has been countless of moments when I reflected back to days in his classroom. Tony was my best friend growing up at Jamestown´s Roosevelt Elementary. Shot lots of baskets in his driveway, helped delivered his newspapers on his route, collected sports cards together and even had a bloody football accident on the playground that chipped my tooth and his forehead. We drifted apart when I went towards running partly because I could no longer make the basketball teams of which he was one of the stars. But we maintained a more distant friendship through college.
Tony was always so gifted in many things including friendship I´m certain making him special as a teacher and family man. Wow, cannot believe this news. God´s Blessings forever Tony to you and your family.

My condolences to all of Tony´s family on his passing. Tony was my tennis coach for a couple years at JHS in the mid-80´s and I always remember his athleticism and competitive nature as he drove a less than polished group of tennis players to far exceed what most thought was possible during his time in the role. He was no nonsense and he pushed us, but that´s what we needed and I know he helped make me a better player and stronger mentally. Rest in peace Tony.

So many years ago, Tony, yet I still recall those glory days of mine at The Athlete´s Foot...first as a coworker alongside you and then as your boss. Our deepest sympathies to Kathryn and the girls during this difficult time. Tony was such a wonderful and gracious person. We were lucky to have Mr. Diede teach both of our children for 8th grade history with Dalton also having Tony as his home room teacher. We still remember Samantha besting her grandfather on some WW2 trivia that surprised and greatly impressed her grandfather as he considered himself a bit of a history buff. It impressed us too but we were not surprised as we knew how well she was taught.
Mr Diede ignited a history spark in Dalton that continues to this day. Also, at the first parent/teacher conference, Tony was right on about Dalton’s strengths and weaknesses (hand writing and task management, ugh!) and provided sage advice about keeping everything in perspective, both for Dalton and his parents.
I can think of no higher praise for a dedicated teacher.
Dalton still talks about the fun times on the golf team!
Our heartfelt condolences to the family on your loss.

Tony and I known each other since practically since birth! We lived only a block away from each other. We used to walk to school with each other. We played baseball, basketball, football together! He was a very honorable boy, he stayed away from trouble unlike me, I was always getting in trouble! He was the youngest sibling in his family, I always called him the mistake because he had 2 older sisters and brother that were the same age as my older sisters and brother. Except he was years diference from the next youngest sibling. So basically he was raised by them and moved out long before he graduated HS. I was always at his house when I was in grade school but we grew apart in HS cause like I said earlier he was a very honorable guy while I got into trouble all the time like throwing snowbals at trucks and cars! We always stayed in touch with each other. I'm going to miss him he was a really good friend! Kathy you married a great man and father!

Sending my deepest condolences to the Diede family. Tony was my Varsity Basketball Coach in High School and I forever remember him as he continually worked with me to make a better player. I was only 5´5" and was a forward so needed to work harder against the taller players and he was so vital to me as a coach which made a difference in my play, confidence level, strength, and development. I believe he was one of the reasons I received my scholarship for basketball in undergrad and I was always so grateful that he was part of my journey as a coach and just in life. I will remember his infectious love for history and basketball. I am grateful for his passion that sparked those interests in me. As a teacher and story teller his immersive lessons were one of a kind, that will be remembered forever. As a basketball coach, I can say that he was able to instill the love of the game. I am forever grateful that I was able to be a student of his.
One memory in particular was while coaching, he was able to show me how to be effective in the post even though I was smaller then other centers. I learned heart over height from him and carry that mentality with me thanks to his guidance.

Mr. Diede, I was too young to ever express my gratitude, but you truly were my strength in 8th grade. When I would come crying to school because of a bad situations at home, you were the only teacher to check up on me and offer words of advice. You pushed the administration to get involved to get me help. I´ve never forgotten those moments and they will stick with me forever. You were an incredible teacher and an even more incredible person. May you rest in eternal peace.

Mr. Diede was truly one of a kind. His passion for teaching, history, and the way he cared so deeply for all his students left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
I´m so grateful to have been one of his students-he even inspired me to become an international teacher myself, and his love for education is still a major influence on me.
With deepest sympathy,

Dear Mr.Diede
Thank you for being the incredible teacher that you were. Your energy and passion for history made every lesson come to life, and it was clear how much you truly cared about each of your students. You didn´t just teach facts; you inspired us to think, to question, and to see the world through new perspectives. Your enthusiasm was contagious, and your kindness left a lasting mark on all of us.
You made a difference in more ways than you could ever know, and for that, I will always be grateful. Thank you for sharing not only your knowledge but also your heart.
Rest in peace, and know that your legacy lives on in the many lives you touched.
The Medjkouah Family sends their prayers.

Like all who knew Tony I am so sad to hear of his passing. A wonderful family man, educator and friend. I have such fond memories of our regular battles and chats on the tennis court, even if I cannot recall ever beating him. His love of life was infectious and he was just so good at everything he did. Gone way too soon but rest in peace my friend.

I feel so fortunate and grateful to have known Mr.Diede. He never made students feel incapable or unseen, he taught us to work hard but to have fun while doing so. Mr.Diede helped me create so many core memories in Dhahran, and the reason I had so many belly laughs in 8th grade. for that I can never thank him enough. Any day I had history with Mr.Diede I knew was going to be a great day. He filled his classroom with magic. His way of teaching was so captivating- You could hear his powerful storytelling and student´s laughter from across the hallway. Anyone who did not have the absolute joy of having him as a teacher was truly envious. People looked forward to 8th grade because of the possibility of him being their teacher. A few memories that come to mind is when we recreated the civil war with a water balloon fight, the ghost dance and learning about our ancestry. He was so fascinated with each students´ ancestry and made us all feel so valuable.
years after leaving to boarding school, I would often visit Mr.Diede- he would greet me with a warm hug and cheerful smile. He was always so eager to hear of my time in Texas and what I was up to. He has such a special place in our hearts and minds.
Besides his teaching, he spoke so fondly of his family. I remember admiring his relationship with his wife. His face would light up when he saw her in the library.
His legacy is truly inspiring, hearts are mourning this loss in every corner of the planet. May his soul rest in eternal peace and may we all carry his love for life with us.
To his family- may endless memories of Mr.Diede bring you comfort. We are all so lucky to have known him. Wishing you peace and courage.

While I only got to spend a short time with Mr. Diede, I have always looked up to him as the one of the most sterling examples of what a father and husband should embody. As a young man, away from my family in a new state, Mr. Diede felt like a second father to me and I will never forget the kindness and generosity he imparted.
My heart truly goes out to all of the Diede family for your loss.

Tony was a super teacher and had an impact on Christopher and Danae who were both fortunate to have him as a teacher in Dhahran. It was always fun seeing him on the golf course too! Tony truly made the world a better place during his short time here. We are blessed to have known him and look forward to the day we will see him again. Love, David & Lisa Gregory
