Anthony Mangogna Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2025.
Anthony J. Mangogna, age 86, passed away peacefully in his home at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ, on August 31, 2025. His loving wife Marvy was by his side.

Tony was born on July 13, 1939 to Anthony and Ninfa (Stassi) Mangogna in Staten Island, New York. He studied Engineering at Pratt, earned his Master's degree, and worked as an Aviation Systems Engineer, including at Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bendix, Lear Siegler, and Honeywell. He was married to Margaret (Peggy) Donovan from 1965 until Peggy's passing in 2008. Together, Tony and Peggy raised their son Mark. Tony married Marvelia (Marvy) Gonzalez in 2011.

Marvy called Tony "Pure Heart," a man who was "born sweet." Never a kinder soul walked the earth. Tony was quick to love and quick to forgive, with a kind word and a joke for everyone. He was a lover of dancing, music, walks in the woods, and apple pie. He entertained friends, family, and his seven grandchildren with serenades on the guitar. He found joy in the small wonders of life, from a beautiful flower to a delicious meal.

He was a man of deep faith who loved as Jesus loved, without hesitation or reservation. Tony truly embodied Corinthians 13: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

Tony is in heaven with his parents, Anthony and Ninfa, his wife Peggy, and his brothers Vincent Mangogna and Anthony Gerardi. He is survived by his son Mark, his wife Marvy, his stepdaughters Ianthé Zabel and Jessica Shortall, and his seven grandchildren: Brielle, Otis, Jack, Mae, Etta, Ed, and Jane.

Tony long mourned the loss of his mother Ninfa when he was only six years old. Per his wishes, his ashes will be interred with his mother at St. Peter's Cemetery in Staten Island.

A celebration of life will be held at Heath Village auditorium on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 10 am, with light refreshments to follow. Please RSVP at https://pp.events/b4n3jV7P

Dearest Uncle Tony,
From a very early age you were my favorite uncle and was always around for holidays, celebrations, and family gatherings. You were always supportive and happy to participate in any task. We would play bocci, went skiing, and play guitar...When dad passed I was proud to learn and play with you and cousin Mark and be part of your special gift..
Being on time wasn't your greatest trait or finishing your pasta so we could serve the holiday roast and squeeze in some guitar playing. Lol
I remember you saved me when we were in LBI during a hurricane and it rained like 5 days. You entertained Jenna and Melissa far better than me. It was your kind gift.
Well , Im happy your not in pain in heaven with Peg, Dad, Frank and Rick and the rest of our family that passed before us. RIP , we love and miss you

Guy

Dear cousin Anthony, You will be remember for the music and joy that you brought into all our lives. You made my childhood magical!I never see a guitar without the sweet remembrance of you strumming and singing along with your brother and dad, bringing a family gathering to life. How blessed we all were when my Aunt Tootsie met your dad and brought you into our lives. You will never be forgotten. With love Terrie

In loving memory of our dear Uncle Tony, whose kindness knew no bounds. He had a heart big enough to hold everyone he met, and a spirit that brought warmth and comfort wherever he went. His gentle words, generous soul, and unwavering love touched countless lives, and the world will feel little less bright without him. Though he may no longer walk beside us, the love he gave so freely lives on in every life he touched. We are forever grateful to have known and loved him and we know he's playing his guitar and singing his favorite "Eagles" tunes with his brother Vinnie and his cousins who were waiting for him to complete their band in heaven. Mark, Marvey we are so sorry for your loss. He will definitely be forever by your side. With much love, Mark and Patti
