Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 10, 2012.
Anthony "Jerry" Palazzo
Portland, Maine

Anthony "Jerry" Palazzo, 62 years old, of Portland, ME died Saturday, December 8, 2012 following a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma for over ten years.
Jerry was born in Portland on July 26, 1950, the son of Angelo A. and Gloria (Mattatall) Palazzo. He attended local schools, graduating from Deering High School. Jerry continued his education at the University of Maine Orono, graduating with a degree in Forest Services. For over 30 years Jerry worked as a Line Inspector for C.M.P. as part of the IBEW 1837 Union.
Jerry loved the sea. He enjoyed living in the community at Southport Marine aboard his sailboat "Quest" and taking her out to spread her sails in Boothbay Harbor, Downeast Maine and dressing her up for the annual Casco Bay Parade of Lights. Jerry also had a great love of the outdoors. Spending summers at the family camp on Big Sebago Lake was a great love of his. He enjoyed quiet times fishing and hunting in the northern woods of Maine. He especially enjoyed his Thanksgiving trips to the "Hunting Bus" with his friends.
Jerry was a very loving and unselfish man. He enjoyed his life to the fullest without regret, always looking for the positives in life and mankind. He was a son, brother, uncle, and friend to many that will most certainly be missed.
Predeceasing Jerry was his father Angelo.
Jerry leaves behind his loving mother Gloria Palazzo of Cumberland Foreside, a sister Debbie Porter and her husband Ken also of Cumberland Foreside, a nephew Scott Caron and his wife Yola of Chicago and their children Natalia and Marrisa, a niece Jenn Small and her husband Mark of Falmouth and their children Zack and Maddie.
A period of visitation for Jerry and his family will be held this Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 5 to 7 pm at the Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME; where a memorial service for Jerry will be held at 11:00 am on Friday the 14th.
In lieu of flowers the Palazzo family suggests memorials be made in Jerry's name to Mercy Oncology & Hematology Center, Suite 360, Patient Support Fund, 195 Fore River Pkwy., Portland, ME 04102.
Care for Jerry and his family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland, Maine.

Gerry and I grew up together in Portland in the early 1950's. My parents took many pictures of us together as we were very young and good looking then. We moved to South Portland and I remember when your family came over and showed us a Polaride Camera, which we had never seen before, and how it developed pictures while you watched it. My mother still has the pictures from it in her album. The last time I saw you was in 1970 as we both worked for Sebago Lake State Park in Naples. We got in a arguement one day on who would drive the truck and who would dump the trash in the back from the campground. It was one of the more unpleasant jobs there but someone had to do it. We were just young then and it was a nice summer working there. My world changed abruptly after that as I went into the service and Vietnam a short time later. I fondly remember those times at the park and warm summer days, and nites at the Log Cabin and Serenity Hill. Cancer tried to claim me a few years back due to exposure to Agent Orange during the war. It was battle that I felt defenseless in for the first time. Mom is going to try to contact your mom as Marge is residing at Falmouth By the Sea in Falmouth. I'm sorry for your loss Gloria and Debbie.

Jerry was the first person I met when I came to South Port. Always there to grab a line offer advice when needed. Best of all to sit on deck with a rum in hand and talk boats and boating to the wee hours of the night. We lost a member of our live a board family who will be missed. Jerry you will always have fair winds and following seas.

Dear Debbie and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about Jerry's passing. We attended school in Portland together and used to walk up Stevens Avenue from Brighton together to class. I have always remembered him as a fun and wonderfully friendly young man since it's been years since we last saw each other. Wish he could have been at a DHS reunion. He'll be greatly missed.

I met Jerry in December of 2004. We had just purchased our sailboat & moved her to her winter berth at South Port Marine,,,,the face dock on A Dock. 2 days later, a Nor'Easter blew in. Along with tending to his boat,, Jerry also played a roll in ensuring our boat was secure. That was simply who Jerry was. He remained so for the eight years we were friends. I lived aboard at South Port as Jerry's neighbor and friend for several years. He would duck below, aboard my boat, on a winter day. We would share some rum, or sambuca. We would talk of the days events, our boats and the future. We would talk of going south,,, and of having gone south. We shared this "thing" that many do not understand. We shared this "thing" that many have no interest in knowing of. But it bound Jerry & I together, and continues to bind us.

God speed Friend.

As one of the live aboard members of the Southport Marina community, I so enjoyed all times spent with Jerry. We shrink-wrapped our boats together every year, had many parties and dinners aboard, and, in general, enjoyed the live aboard life. Jerry is already sorely missed by all of us live aboards who knew him. He was happiest on the water like so many of his friends. Smooth sailing, my friend.

I had the honor of caring for Anthony many years ago when I was a nurse at Mercy. I am so sad to learn of his passing. I was fortunate to run into him from time to time over the years and can honestly say he was someone who helped make me a better nurse. He was always positive, even at times when he was at his worst. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed by the many lives he touched including my own.

Jerry was a wonderful neighbor and we enjoyed living near him at South Port Marine. He was totally unselfish, had a wonderful sense of humor, was always willing to lend aid, and was one of the bravest, most upbeat people we've met. His death is a great loss. We send condolences to his family, and raise a toast of rum in his memory.

To Anthony's family, it was an honor and a pleasure meeting Anthony and being a part of this journey he was on. Anthony always had a smile on his face and was always quick to laugh. He was such a gentleman, a kind and compassionate man who loved his family, his boat and the outdoors. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Again, it was such a honor knowing Anthony. He will be greatly missed by many.
