Anthony Joseph "Tony" Silva passed away on Friday surrounded by his family. He was a leader and mentor to many. Tony was born in New York City and was a resident of the East Bay for more than 60 years. Tony graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in physiology from the University of California, Berkeley. After enlisting and serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Tony enjoyed a 40 year career with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as biomedical research scientist. He retired in 2001 and coached basketball at Bishop O'Dowd High School for 10 years. Tony dedicated over 20 years to Southern Alameda County Catholic Youth Organization, serving as a Board Member as well as coaching many youth basketball teams at All Saints Parish. He was an avid bowler and competed in tournaments nationally. Tony enjoyed politics, golfing and outings with his wife. Above all, Tony loved spending time with his family. Tony is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Caryn, devoted children Jason Silva (Alana) of San Lorenzo, Kristen Silva of Oakland and Stephen Silva of Hayward, grandson Julian Silva of San Lorenzo and St. Bernard mix, Murphy. He is also survived by his sisters Marie Silva of Nevada and Marlene Silva of Nevada, brother Robert Silva (Linda) of Arizona and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Nick and mother Frances.His warm passionate spirit will be missed by all who knew him. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday, Feb 18. from noon – 8 p.m., with a vigil at 7 p.m. at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave in San Leandro; Funeral Mass on Friday, Feb. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Leander Church, 550 W Estudillo Ave in San Leandro followed by burial at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery, 32992 Mission Blvd in Hayward.
