Weld, Richard Glen

Richard Glen Weld, 75 of Altoona, died on Sunday, October 28, 2012. He was born to Isabella (nee: McKnight) and Glen Weld on November 8, 1936, in Madison, WI. At an early age, his family moved to Minnesota where he graduated from high school in Duluth.

He received his B.S. in Speech Correction from the U. of M. Richard was the head of the Speech Therapy Dept. in the Oshkosh Area Public Schools for several years. In 1965, he received a M.S. in Special Education and in 1972, received a P.H.D. in Behavioral Disabilities from U.W. Madison. He worked as a therapist for several years at the Northern Development Center before joining the faculty at U.W. Eau Claire. He taught introductory courses in Special Education and was an authority on a number of subjects including applied behavioral analysis, mental retardation, A.D.D. and autism.

Dick also operated a landscape business, Chippewa Valley Nursery, during the summer months. He was an avid golfer who served as President of the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club. His great joy was golfing with his sons, especially on Father's Day and at the Northland Country Club Invitational in Duluth, MN.

He was an accomplished artist. Many of his compositions were produced in a number of ways; collage, assemblage, reliefs, sculpture, and construction which were exhibited in a number of shows and galleries.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; three sons, Terry (Janet), Scott (Laura) and Tim (Karen); six grandchildren, Kayla, Chloe, Jonah, Gabby, Riley and Eloise; a brother Jerry (Mary); a sister, Karen (Charles) Andresen; and a brother-in-law Jack Zabel.

A Celebration of Dick's life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, 828 Clubview Lane, Altoona. Memorial contributions to the U.W. Eau Claire Foundation or the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center would be greatly appreciated.
