Antonio Castellvi Obituary

Published by TBO.com on Feb. 11, 2014.
CASTELLVI, Antonio E., M.D., age 61, died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014. He is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 40 years, Ramona, daughter Rami, practicing attorney, (Brian Little) of Danville Kentucky, and sons Cheech (Christine) a doctor in Family Practice in Pawley's Island, SC. and Alex, currently a resident in Neurosurgery in Pittsburgh, PA., grandchildren Jack and Bo Little, and Carolina and Alex Castellvi, his mother Aleida, sister Ana Corso, brothers Dr. Guillermo and Dr. Jorge Castellvi, all of Tampa. Dr. Castellvi, 'aka Doc' was an accomplished and well known spine surgeon, in partnership with the Florida Orthopaedic Institute and in active spine surgical practice in Tampa for over 30 years. During these years he maintained academic positions with USF and FOI, and supervised, trained and mentored many residents and fellows in spine surgery. As medical director of the Spine Biomechanics Lab at FOI, he actively investigated and reported innovations in spine surgery technique and instrumentation. As a frequent lecturer for several spine societies, he travelled frequently, visited and collaborated with the leading surgeons worldwide and was well respected by the manufactures of spinal implants as well as his peers. He received many awards and medical honors, was appointed to investigative committees, published results of initiated studies, and performed countless surgeries on spine injuries and disease. Meanwhile he was a devoted dad, coaching his sons in baseball, and being an avid outdoorsman, regularly fishing both in the keys and Tampa Bay, and hunting, mostly duck, quail and deer with his sons, and brothers and friends. Recently, he found a new passion...road cycling in groups with friends but mostly with his brother, Jochi. If you asked Tony what was his biggest and best accomplishment, he say, without hesitation, his family! His family wishes to thank the overwhelming support of their friends and suggest that any gifts or memoriams be sent to Christ the King Catholic School Scholarship Fund and FORE- the Foundation for Orthopedic Research & Education. A wake service will be at 6 PM on Tuesday evening Feb 11th at Christ the King Catholic Church. The family will receive guests after the wake service in the McLoughlin Center at Christ the King until 9 PM. Catholic funeral mass will be at Christ the King Catholic Church on Wednesday Feb. 12th at 2pm. Interment will be at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. Guestbook may be signed at www.BlountCurryMacdill.com

Dr. Castellvi performed a second back surgery on me in 1991...the first for him. He corrected what the first doctor messed up. I am eternally grateful for his skills and him as a person. Cannot believe this occurred/happened to him. Grace and favor on your family, may the peace that passes understanding come upon them and comfort them, in Jesus' Name.

First of all, I would like to send my condolences to his family. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all. I received a letter from FOI, and was just devastated and shocked to learn of his passing. He performed my back surgery and we were now preparing for surgery on my neck. He was not only my doctor, but a friend as well. He was a brilliant, compassionate and caring man. He would always take his time with you no matter how busy he was. He will truly be missed. There will never be another "Doc", after all, he was truly one of a kind.

My deepest sympathy to Tony's family. I was one of Tony's first nurse patient's that he did spine surgery on in 11/84 and never had a problem. I assisted him in the OR for over a decade and became an excellent CRNFA because of having the best teach me. God blessed those of us who knew him. He will be loved and missed forever in our hearts. He was a Gifted surgeon, fisherman/hunter, dog lover and wonderful friend. I will always cherish the last hug he gave me when I saw him last year. God will help us and take care of him. He will watch over his loved ones. Be at peace.

My wife and I were shocked to receive the phone call from Florida Orth. I had a postop appointment with the Doc and was looking forward to seeing him once again. My sympathy goes to his family and friends, also to the people who might have needed his skill and talent. For truly the world has lost a fine gentleman and Doctor.

Dr. Castellvi performed major spine surgery on me Jan 3 and 5, 2011, and gave me back mobility and less pain. I was 71 and he was so proud of his success with my case. He was truly a wonderful and caring person and I am very grateful for being his patient. I last saw him Nov. 2013 for a spinal pain block I will miss him greatly. My prayers are with his family.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Castellvi. He performed my Spinal Surgery in December, 2012. His son Cheech and my daughter went to Plant High together. I remember when Doc took such great care of our Principal, Vince Sussman, when he had his accident. That is why I would have trusted no one else to do my surgery. I remember fondly my visit just prior to my surgery when he held my hand and said "I will not let anything happen to you in surgery, I promise" it was so comforting to me. He will be missed! My prayers go out to his family and FOI in their time of loss.

Dr. Castellvi just performed spinal surgery a month ago and I wouldn't have wanted any other surgeon in the OR with me. A brilliant physician but even more, a tremendously kind and caring person. I can't express the sadness I feel. His family will be in my prayers.

Ramone and family... We are heartbroken with you. Doc loved his family and as busy as a Doctor can be made time for each of them. I loved sitting with him at UT baseball games. His smile was infectious and his joyful spirit contagious. He loved life and always wanted to make it better for everyone else. He'll be greatly missed because he was greatly loved. The Whitten family are all praying for you. You are loved. Pastor Ken Whitten

Our thoughts and prayers go to the Castellvi family at this sad time. As a neighbor, we were introduced to the family when our daughter Kathryn and Cheech carpooled to Plant. We also brought the family black lab home as he came to hang out with our yellow lab. Everyone will miss Doc and we pray he is resting with the angels after making this world a better place.

I was so heart broken to hear this sad news. I got to know him and his brothers many years ago at SJH. When I would see him out driving in Tampa he would have the kids with him taking them here and there. Great doctor, man, husband and father. My thoughts are with his family.

I first met "Toniy when he was a Spine Fellow at the University of Rochester, as I was the nurse manager for Orthopaedics. I had the opportunity to work closely with Tony. Tony loved all things Tampa and in particular, his family. Tony's sense of humor was superseded only by his intelligence and humility. When I moved to USF Tampa a few years ago, I had the opportunity to reconnect with Tony. Nothing changed - still funny, brilliant, and incredibly proud of his family. We traded stories of our families and the changes in spine surgery and orthopaedics in general. My thoughts and prayers are with you as we mourn the loss of such a loving and gifted man...and celebrate his life

I am in shock! Dr. Castellvi saved my quality of life 11 years ago when no other doctor would touch me. I am beyond saddened by this news. I am truly blessed to have found him when I needed him most. He then later became my dad's back surgeon just 2 years ago, and gave him back quality of life. My heart-felt sympathy and prayers go out to his family. I know he thought the world of his family. God's peace be with you all!
