Antonio de Grassi

My cousin Tony deGrassi lived two blocks away from my home in Palo Alto, California . I always looked up to him... he was a few years older than me and he was a kind human being who was talented in a myriad of ways. Just being his cousin was something I was always proud of. He will be missed.

Tony personified what it means to be a gentle soul. As cousins living at times great distances apart, we didn´t meet until we were adults. I wish we had met sooner, though, as he, Gina, and Alex are great company, entertaining in the best way, and whip smart in any conversation. Whether together with them individually or collectively, time in the company of these cousins goes fast with the zest for life and family they embody. I last visited Tony and Maura in January in Lincoln, a visit ever more cherished now. Tony and Maura were great hosts, sending me home with hugs, one of Tony´s CDs, and a full box of the TJ´s crackers I fell in love with at their home-kindness with generosity is their mantra.

Tony was a year ahead of me at Gunn High School in Palo Alto. Always the popular guy on campus. His company, wit and wonderful personality was enjoyed by all that knew him.

I got to know Tony in ninth grade and high school and he was a good friend. He was smart and funny and a standout athlete, baseball, particularly...
Back in ninth grade we all played a wonderfully crazy game of mud football, either at Stanford Elementary, or at the Escondido School whenever it rained, and those wild happy games seem somehow emblematic of those energetic years. Most of us were knuckleheads back then, but Tony had a sense of gravity and proportion that I had great respect for. And this sense of self seems to have accompanied him throughout a very happy life. Many cheers and many condolences.

Tony and his brother Alex lived just a few blocks from me in College Terrace, and I met him in 3rd grade at Stanford Elementary. I thought he was SO cute and way out of my league. In 6th grade he selected me for his squad of crossing guards and I was flattered that he chose me. All through jr. high and Gunn, I watched him grow into a stellar young man, a leader and a gentleman. I always admired him, and knew he was destined for a good life-- and that's what he appears to have had, with extended family and friends. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. RIP dear old friend...

Fare thee well Tony, on your new journey.

When Tony and I were kids, about the scooter riding age described by Alex, Tony and I had many "overnights" spent talking about whatever 12-13 year old boys talk about.

Tony and I played sports and got into mild mischief all over College Terrace and the Stanford campus. Great memories of exploration and a good friendship. I will remember him and those days.

When we heard from Mark and Karen Hellender the Tony had passed, we were shocked and saddened. Tony was such a fun, great and fair boss and co-worker when Nadine worked for him in the late 80's and early 90's. When we lived in Concord, we'd run into Tony and Maura out and about with their two young sons. We were also surprised to find out that Tony and Maura moved to Lincoln Hills which is where we we moved to 4 years ago! In fact, we live pretty close to their home. Tony was as good an older brother as one could ask for. Sure, we had the usually older brother younger brother spats as kids, but he was always looking out for me and included me in neighborhood sports with the older kids. I was the best man at his wedding and he at mine. We enjoyed playing music together when we could, and always kept in touch by phone and text. He was also a wonderful father and grandfather, and he will be sorely missed. I think this photo with a granddaughter and her friend at his son Brian's wedding celebration captures him well. We love you Tony!

Tony de Grassi was a client, colleague, and boss of mine for much of my 13 years at Kaiser Permanente. I adored working with him He was smart, supportive, warm, funny and creative. I have the fondest of memories of Tony playing guitar in Asilomar at a Marketing retreat and again, just at the beginning of COVID playing a solo version of Leonard Cohen´s Hallelujah at Lu Bailey's celebration of life. There wasn´t a dry eye in the house. As they say in the Jewish tradition, "may his memory be a blessing."
