Antonio de Grassi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 20, 2025.
Antonio de Grassi was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on September 19, 1948, to Antonio de Grassi of San Francisco, California, and Margaret de Grassi (née Jackson) of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He passed away in Sacramento, California, on June 25, 2025, surrounded by members of his loving family.

Antonio, known to friends and family as Tony, was the second of three children and was raised in Palo Alto, California. Tony married the love of his life, Maura Baumeister, in 1972 and settled in Concord, CA, where they raised their two sons and lived for the next 40 years. Tony had a 30-year career leading sales and account management for Kaiser Permanente, where he was loved and made many lifelong friends.

Tony loved life. He was funny, ever-curious, fun to be around, and retained his 1960s liberal, free-spirited ways throughout his life. He was kind, compassionate and caring and always saw the best in people. He loved entertaining with stories, jokes, and anecdotes as well as tinkering with his toys - he could often be found racing remote control boats at the park or zooming around town on his electric scooter like a 12-year-old. Tony had a passion for music, and he enjoyed singing and playing guitar in his free time. He had a wonderful voice, and in retirement he began performing in public. While he never achieved the status of his idols like Bob Dylan or James Taylor, he was a crowd favorite with steady gigs playing and singing at local farmers' markets and private events.

Tony was also a major sports fan, with a particular passion for baseball, shared by his two sons. He always found time to throw batting practice to them no matter what was on his plate, and literally never missed one of their games. He coached his kids with a remarkable joy and positivity that was admired by all. He stayed active to the end, enjoying golf, tennis, and pickleball. Tony loved nothing more than spending time with his wife and cats, enjoying the warm summer nights on his back porch, and sipping a glass of Zinfandel. In short, he was the best, and he will be much missed by all who knew him.

Tony is survived by his wife Maura, his sister Gina de Grassi and partner Jim Reed, his brother and wife Alex and Alison de Grassi, his two sons Tony Jr. and Brian, daughters-in-law Emily and Nga, niece Erika Beyer, nephews Ian Beyer, JJ Duffy and Ryan Duffy, and Maura's sister and husband Kristen and Jack Duffy. Tony was a loving grandfather (known as Papa) to his five grandchildren, Cory, Hailey, Antonio (Will), Kira, and Zoe. He also leaves behind countless friends and colleagues whom he loved and who loved him dearly.

Arrangements for a memorial are being planned and will be announced to friends and family.

My cousin Tony deGrassi lived two blocks away from my home in Palo Alto, California . I always looked up to him... he was a few years older than me and he was a kind human being who was talented in a myriad of ways. Just being his cousin was something I was always proud of. He will be missed.

Tony personified what it means to be a gentle soul. As cousins living at times great distances apart, we didn´t meet until we were adults. I wish we had met sooner, though, as he, Gina, and Alex are great company, entertaining in the best way, and whip smart in any conversation. Whether together with them individually or collectively, time in the company of these cousins goes fast with the zest for life and family they embody. I last visited Tony and Maura in January in Lincoln, a visit ever more cherished now. Tony and Maura were great hosts, sending me home with hugs, one of Tony´s CDs, and a full box of the TJ´s crackers I fell in love with at their home-kindness with generosity is their mantra.

Tony was a year ahead of me at Gunn High School in Palo Alto. Always the popular guy on campus. His company, wit and wonderful personality was enjoyed by all that knew him.

I got to know Tony in ninth grade and high school and he was a good friend. He was smart and funny and a standout athlete, baseball, particularly...
Back in ninth grade we all played a wonderfully crazy game of mud football, either at Stanford Elementary, or at the Escondido School whenever it rained, and those wild happy games seem somehow emblematic of those energetic years. Most of us were knuckleheads back then, but Tony had a sense of gravity and proportion that I had great respect for. And this sense of self seems to have accompanied him throughout a very happy life. Many cheers and many condolences.

Tony and his brother Alex lived just a few blocks from me in College Terrace, and I met him in 3rd grade at Stanford Elementary. I thought he was SO cute and way out of my league. In 6th grade he selected me for his squad of crossing guards and I was flattered that he chose me. All through jr. high and Gunn, I watched him grow into a stellar young man, a leader and a gentleman. I always admired him, and knew he was destined for a good life-- and that's what he appears to have had, with extended family and friends. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. RIP dear old friend...

When Tony and I were kids, about the scooter riding age described by Alex, Tony and I had many "overnights" spent talking about whatever 12-13 year old boys talk about.

Tony and I played sports and got into mild mischief all over College Terrace and the Stanford campus. Great memories of exploration and a good friendship. I will remember him and those days.

When we heard from Mark and Karen Hellender the Tony had passed, we were shocked and saddened. Tony was such a fun, great and fair boss and co-worker when Nadine worked for him in the late 80's and early 90's. When we lived in Concord, we'd run into Tony and Maura out and about with their two young sons. We were also surprised to find out that Tony and Maura moved to Lincoln Hills which is where we we moved to 4 years ago! In fact, we live pretty close to their home. Sending our love and condolences to Maura and their family. Ken and Nadine Dale

Tony was as good an older brother as one could ask for. Sure, we had the usually older brother younger brother spats as kids, but he was always looking out for me and included me in neighborhood sports with the older kids. I was the best man at his wedding and he at mine. We enjoyed playing music together when we could, and always kept in touch by phone and text. He was also a wonderful father and grandfather, and he will be sorely missed. I think this photo with a granddaughter and her friend at his son Brian's wedding celebration captures him well. We love you Tony!

Tony de Grassi was a client, colleague, and boss of mine for much of my 13 years at Kaiser Permanente. I adored working with him He was smart, supportive, warm, funny and creative. I have the fondest of memories of Tony playing guitar in Asilomar at a Marketing retreat and again, just at the beginning of COVID playing a solo version of Leonard Cohen´s Hallelujah at Lu Bailey's celebration of life. There wasn´t a dry eye in the house. As they say in the Jewish tradition, "may his memory be a blessing."

Deepest Condolence to Maura and the family. New him for a short time, shined in organizing skills.
