Dr. Antti Jaakko Koivo was born Antti Jaakko Koivuniemi in Vaasa, Finland on April 9, 1932. He grew up in Vaasa and earned a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland. He was sponsored by the Rotary Club as a Rotary Fellow to come to the United States to study for a Ph.D. at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. There he received the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1960-61 and J. C. Maxwell Fellowship in 1961-62. Dr. Koivo earned his Ph.D. and later a M.S. at Indiana University.

Dr. Koivo is survived by his daughter, Lilli Koivo Howse (Michael), and son, Allan Koivo (Sommer). In retirement, Antti spent many hours teaching geometry, algebra, the joys of academic achievement, and conquering intellectual challenges to his grandchildren Harmon, Maija, Annika, and Ingrid Howse. He was thrilled at their athletic achievements in basketball, volleyball, tennis, and soccer. Allan and Sommer provided the latest addition to the family with their daughter, Kristina. Antti spent many hours enjoying Kristina.

Antti is also survived by his brother, Heikki (Sirpa) and niece Anne Koivo Gansner. He was preceded in death by his parents (Niilo and Elma) and sister, Kyllikki.

Dr. Koivo was a Professor Emeritus at the Purdue University School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in West Lafayette, IN. He held visiting positions in the Finnish Academy of Science and Technology (Helsinki, Finland), Armstrong Laboratory (Wright-Patterson AFB, OH), Wright Laboratory (Tyndall AFB, Tyndall, FL), MEL (AIST) of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Japan (Tsubuka, Japan), University of Hannover (Hannover, Germany), and Helsinki University of Technology, Finland.

He received the D. Ewing Award for Excellence in Teaching in the School of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. He was Rotary Fellow, and a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, and Life Fellow of the IEEE. He was a Senior Research Price Awardee of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), 1993-1994. He is listed in American Men and Women in Science, Who's Who in Technology Today, American Men in Science, and International Who's Who in Education.

A family service will be held in Finland. Donations can be made to Purdue University Electrical Engineering Department.
