Ardell Brophy Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Nov. 6 to Nov. 8, 2015.
Ardell Louise Brophy May 2, 1956-October 27, 2015 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ardell Brophy at Kelowna General Hospital on October 27, 2015. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 22 from 2-4 PM at Confederation Community Centre, Banquet Hall, 4585 Albert Street, Burnaby BC. In her all too brief life, Ardell was known at work as a passionate Union Representative for COPE and, in her social life, as the founder of the LAFF Riot Girls, the largest and longest running female comedy troupe in Canada. Ardell's efforts at work were recognized by COPE in the establishment of the annual Ardell Brophy Commemorative Award in 2010. Ardell's volunteer efforts in the community were recognized by her being awarded a Burnaby Citizen Award in 2008, The Vancouver YWCA Woman of the Year Award in 2010, and the international Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award in 2014. Ardell was predeceased by her parents, Pearl Brophy (nee Fitzpatrick)in 1991 and Randolph Brophy in 1994. Ardell is survived by her loving brother Randey, sister-in-law Allie (Alice), niece Erin Brophy and nephew Sean Brophy. Ardell is also survived by numerous friends, co-workers and female comics who simply would not have had their opportunities in life without the efforts and encouragement of this brave, strong woman. In lieu of flowers, donations to Charlford House Society for Women, Burnaby, would be appreciated

Ardell was a trouper, an athlete and a hero to comics everywhere. Every day of her life, she knew what was important, and fought for it. She will always be well-remembered by those of us who knew her.

Although I had not seen Ardell since the late 90's, I have very fond memories of her from our days at the racetrack. Always joking, even in battle where she was instrumental in the unionizing of the mutuel employees at what was then Exhibition Park. I remember one of her first stand up routines that took place at at a track Christmas Party in 1996, of course she kept it horse industry related and had everyone in stitches from the get go. Rest in Paradise Red.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Ardell.

I am very grateful to her for all of the opportunities she gave me to perform Stand Up Comedy and I feel privileged to be counted as a Laff Riot Girl.

I appreciate Ardell's tireless efforts to promote women in comedy. She will be sadly missed.

Sending out heartfelt condolences and prayers to all of Ardell's family and friends who mourn her loss.

A very funny, hard working, dedicated woman. I enjoyed every interaction I had with her, either at the bargaining table or at the comedy club, or over a cup of coffee. Rest in peace Ardell.

I was so sad to read this. Although I have not seen her for close to 20 years, I will never forget Ardell. I had just joined a practice as a newly registered massage therapist, and Ardell was an existing client of a chiropractor at the same clinic. One day I lamented out loud "I need some clients." Ardell was there and immediately called out "I'll be your client!" Thanks Ardell for your support. You were clearly a very special person, and will be missed by many. May you rest in eternal peace.

This was a woman whom did not have to shout to get your attention. Of all the people I have met through my work life - she taught me never give up. Thank you Ardell for crossing my path and helping me understand sometimes moving on is the way to go - to get a better results. You will be missed by many.

I was sad to hear about Ardell. She was a good lady who cared about people . She left her mark on this world, and it is a better place that she walked through it and she will always be remembered as a kind person who fought hard for things she believed in and for people she cared about. It is a privilege to call her friend. I will miss her as all who knew her will. A great loss. Rest in Peace my friend....Yvonne

I met Ardell about 24 years ago when I sat next to her in a small office with ICBC, she entertained us with stories about her height (short) and some of her comedy bits. Such a big presence.
