Arlene Weitzen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 11, 2018.
Arlene Sydell Weitzen March 9, 1931 - February 9, 2018 San Diego Arlene Sydell Weitzen, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9th surrounded by family and friends at Seacrest Village. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 11am at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121. Arlene was born on March 9, 1931 in Far Rockaway, New York, to Rose and Arthur Glickman. Arlene attended Hoover High School where she met Fred Weitzen, Jr. They dated for five years and married on November 24, 1950. Last year Arlene and Fred celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary. After 15 years as a homemaker and mother to three energetic sons, Arlene embarked on a 25-year career with the San Diego County Board of Education, receiving numerous awards for workplace excellence. Arlene's passions included walks with Fred and their many dogs; golf at Stardust and Morgan Run; enjoying nearly 50 years of meals with their Beach Group and travel. Among Arlene's most memorable trips are the Alaskan cruise with Steve and Ava, the Riverboat photo trip from Amsterdam to Budapest with Skip and Janet and the Hawaiian trips with Larry and Mary Lynn. During retirement, Arlene was the navigator as Fred drove their 28-foot motor home across the country. Arlene invested her time with many charities, gardening and reading. For more than 40 years, she hosted the Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast event for family and friends. Arlene is survived by husband Fred; sister Roberta; sons Steven, Harold-Skip and Lawrence; daughters-in-law Ava, Janet and Mary Lynn; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Beth Israel, Seacrest Village or the charity of your choice.

We are so terribly sad about dear Arlene. Fred and Arlene have been such wonderful friends to us, we really feel like they are family. They have been mentors, advising us on our synagogue, our dentist, our groomer and we are so grateful for our little Chloe.
Arlene exemplifies kindness and beauty. She was as beautiful inside as outside. We enjoyed many wonderful evenings together, and stories about their adventures and the family. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed!
We loved your parents not just as friends but as family. Our deepest sympathies to the entire family.
Lots of love Sylvia and Bruce.
