Armand Lugassy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2010.
Dr. Armand A. Lugassy, DDS, PhD, Dr. Armand A. Lugassy, DDS, PhD, 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Marin County on July 8, 2010. Son of Amram Lugassy and Pheobe Lugassy, Dr. Armand A. Lugassy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ruth Ann Lugassy, loving daughters, Heather Lugassy Frank and Holly Lugassy, brother Leon Lugassy and sisters, Dr. Gloria Lugassy and Ninette Kartchner. During his 40 year career as Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry, Dr. Lugassy was an educator, a dentist, a leader and a source of laughter and positive influence for those around him. He loved his profession and he was very passionate about helping others. Along with numerous awards for his accomplishments as a Professor of Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Lugassy was the co-inventor of the M-L Scale, used to quantify occlusal loss. He also ran a successful dental practice in Novato, California. In addition to a resolute commitment to his career, Dr. Lugassy was a successful athlete which started when he was a young man in Morocco, where he was champion sprinter. Dr. Lugassy was a running and cycling enthusiast, and completed many marathons and one and two hundred mile bike races. Never one to miss an opportunity to have fun, Dr. Lugassy completed the Bay to Breakers 12K race many times dressed as a gum stimulator at the end of a toothbrush float led by students at the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a DDS degree in Dentistry and a PhD degree in Philosophy, Dr. Lugassy spent his youth studying in Morocco and France and enjoyed citizenship in both France and the United States throughout his life. His humor, love of life and animals, charitable personality, and determination will be greatly missed. Dad, we love you and you will be deeply missed. Private funeral services for immediate family only were held on Thursday, July 15, 2010 in Marin County. A public memorial service will be held at the University of Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco at 5:30pm on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010.

Thinking of you this morning. Miss you so very much. Luckily for us, we finally found a dentist in Fremont, CA who was one of your students. He knows he must live up to your standards with our dental care. Warmest regards!

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Dr. Lugassy. From the time I was a baby on my mother's lap you were one of my favorite people. You were kinder than I can ever express. I knew something was wrong when my Christmas card was returned to sender. I couldn't bear to look. You were such a huge influence on me. When I joined the military one of the hardest things to give up were our appointments every 6 months. You were the best! I have the picture of you holding my baby the first time we came for a visit. Three generations of my family love you.

Goodbye dear friend. I will always remember all the conversations about the M-L scale, calibrating it against others of the time, and your passion to help make clinical research a more quantitative process. I appreciate your help during those early days of my career -- and your special commitment to making dental materials better.

The first time Dr. Lugassy and I ever spoke was because he'd almost hit me with his car. We laughed about it, and I thanked him for "sparing my life." This near-accident allowed me get to know one of the kindest, brightest, and definitely warmest persons I'd ever known. After that, I made it a point to visit Dr. Lugassy everyday before clinic started, bring him a green gown and listerine, and ask him how his day was going. He was always honestly interested in how I was doing in school and gave me advice not just for dentistry, but about life. I truly appreciated the attention he gave to all of his students and patients and how he made everyone he spoke to feel genuinely special. Before we would go our separate ways, he would always make sure to say goodbye with a hug! I will miss you, Dr. Lugassy!

To Dr. Lugassy's family: knowing him since 1981, it took me many years to figure out that he was much smarter than I and I was just missing his wisdom and needed to pay better attention. He was a remarkable educator and showed a true passion for his work and for helping patients. I honor his efforts and work which will have a lasting effect on many. Truly an individual and mentor to many. All my support and good thoughts to the family at this time. Sincerely, Dan Freeman, Class of '84

We remember Dr. Lugassy as the most passionate educator we had while at UOP. He encouraged and inspired. It will be a challenge for the school to replace him. Tim ran several times with Dr. Lugassy in the toothbrush float. We can still hear Dr. Lugassy's chant. " Brush your teets, brush your teets." Our prayers to his family. It is hard to lose your Dad. Just last week I was driving with my daughters and I found myself, in Dr. Lugassy's deep french accent asking, "Whhhaaaaeeey?" (Why) to an important point my daughter made. He had a way to keep you interested in his lectures of the benign field of materials.
And I will never forget the time my brother decided to forgo his entry in the Davis Double Century Ride. Dr. Lugassy gladly rode for him. The balding, grey haired instructor in the white lab coat rode a 200 mile bike race on a moments notice!
A true genleman that had it all. Success in every aspect of his life!

when I read the bad news on my e-mail my response was ohhhhhhhh noooooooo, and I started to cry , Dr Lugassy was one of my favorite at school ,.He had interviewed me for dental school in 1988 .So I was always big fan of him for giving me a chance to become a student and eventually a proud alumni of a greatest school in united states .
He always spoke in French with me and said to me NEDA-AAA c'estbien !! marvelous !!!!
He had high standards and I always wanted to get his opinion on my work and try to do my best to make him happy with my work. He was my mentor as well . I learned a lot from him. He was a true educator .
I am sorry for future student that don't have the opportunity of learning and working with him.
He was a great educator, a simple man , with a great heart and sense of humor . Every one loved him and he will always be in my heart and thoughts .
I will miss him and my deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends. Neda Oromchian class 1991

I am literally in tears, since he was the friend I was closest to at UOP, working with him side-by-side on Fridays for the last numerous years. He was also my mentor so to speak. I learned a lot from him. I am so sad, and since I didn't teach last quarter, I didn't get to give a proper good bye. I thought I would see him next quarter. I hadn't even had a chance to email him the last few months. Without him there on Fridays, clinic won't ever be the same. I had the pleasure of being his student and then his peer. My condolences to his family. He spoke about them always.
