Arne SORENSEN Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from May 22 to May 23, 2018.
SORENSEN, Arne T., OLY
January 21, 1934 - May 19, 2018
With deep sadness we mark the passing of a shooting legend. Arne accomplished much with his work ethic and inquisitive mind. Predeceased by his daughter Anna Marie Pasternak (Joseph) he leaves behind Rosemary, his wife of 59 years, two sons Wayne (Diane) and Steven, grandsons Jay, Justin and Steven Jr, Michael Pasternak and granddaughter Erin Pasternak. Also sisters Hanna Rasmussen (Jorgen), Edith Olsen, brothers Svend and Thomas (Lizbeth), and many nieces and nephews. Arne's passion was target shooting. A 6th place in the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics and 5th place in the 1978 World Championships put him among the world's elite. He also excelled at long-range rifle and Metallic Silhouette competitions. He achieved these accomplishments while working in the grueling drywall trade. With Rosemary's support of his passion, Arne was truly blessed and could not have achieved what he did. He survived a brain aneurysm in 2016. These last few years required her constant attention which she gave selflessly and lovingly. A memorial will be held for Arne at a later date. Email [email protected] if you knew Arne, with remembrances and condolences. Arrangements in care of Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (403)265-1199. Donations suggested to Sarcee Hospice.

So sad to read of Arnes' passing - we have known him for many years through the mutual love of shooting sports. He was such a quiet, gentle man and will surely be missed by everyone who knew him.
We still have the wooden shoes.

I was 4 years old when I first met Arne. Little did I know that I would enjoy shooting rifles with Arne only a handful of years later. It started with small bore or 22 caliber target rifles first and later when I was 16 and took up full bore or 307 caliber target rifles. My dad started me off shooting but when I started shooting full bore at the Calgary Sarcee range, it was Arne who took me under his wing. He was like my dad away from home and it wasn't too hard since we both had the same last name. Arne was always the person we looked up to and aspired to be like. He was quiet and reserved and but would always give you an informed and honest an opinion. Arne was the first person I went to for advise and I don't remember going down the wrong way once. Arne was always a fun guy to be around and if you ever heard Arne laugh, you'd remember it forever.
Some people will spend their whole life trying to get good at something and some people will tell you how good they are at something but Arne did neither. He was simply an unbelievable rifle shooter and he always let his rifle do the talking. Arne was a good friend to me and he will be forever in my memory. I am going to miss him now that he's gone, but I'll find solace in my memories of him!

Arne was a very close friend to our family. When Arne first came to Canada, my dad gave him a place to stay. My dad encouraged Arne to come with him to the shooting range and they shot together many times. When I was growing up, Arne came out to Strathmore to visit often. He gave me my first ride on his motorbike and I would sit with him while he shot gophers. We have so many wonderful memories of Arne and he will be greatly missed by our family.
