ARNOLD STOKES Obituary
Dr. ARNOLD PAUL STOKES (Age 80)
Of Summerville, SC, widower of Gaye Wims Stokes died of cancer Wednesday, September 5, 2012. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Jane deChantal Catholic Church located at 9701 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 19 2012. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held on the campus of Notre Dame University at a future date. Dr. Stokes was born January 24, 1932 in Bismarck, North Dakota, son of the late Joel Edward Stokes and Elizabeth Rose Bauer Stokes. He received his Doctorate in Mathematics from Notre Dame University and received a Post Doctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. He taught mathematics at Catholic University of America before moving to Georgetown University in 1965, where he taught until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1997. Dr. Stokes was a former member of St. Jane deChantal Catholic Church in Bethesda, MD and is now a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in North Charleston, SC. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine (John) Spielman; sons: Michael Stokes, Jonathan (Liz) Stokes , Thomas (Margaret) Stokes , Christopher (Diane) Stokes and Peter (Jessica) Stokes; sister, Dorothy Gilbert, grandchildren: Melissa Sevoian, Anne Stokes, Sarah Spielman, Patrick Stokes, Mary Stokes, Christopher Stokes, Kelsey Stokes, Abraham Stokes and Hannah Stokes. Memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services
