After graduating, he realized his calling was to become a physician, and he attended medical school at L'Université Libre de Bruxelles, earning a Doctor of Medicine with distinction in 1958.
He completed his internship in general surgery at Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Connecticut. Afterwards, Arthur specialized in orthopaedic surgery, finishing his surgical residency at a variety of hospitals throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York.
It was during his children's surgical residency at The House of St. Giles the Cripple in Brooklyn, NY when he met his wife, Paula, in 1962 on a blind date, and they celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage.
Throughout his medical career, he held many memberships as a Fellow in medical societies (International College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, New York Academy of Medicine, American College of Surgeons and the American Geriatrics Society) and was a Charter Member of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association. He served as the Chief of Orthopaedics at Norwalk Hospital from 1981-1985.
It was in Connecticut where Paula and Arthur settled and had their two daughters, Leslie and Lisa.
In addition to being a well-respected and renowned surgeon, Dr. Brovender enjoyed playing golf, tennis, skiing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid photographer and history buff and enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Arthur was passionate about learning and continued to take classes throughout his life. His religious observance played an important part in his life, and he served as President of Temple Shalom in Norwalk, Connecticut from 1976-1979.
After retiring from his private practice of 37 years in 2000, he continued to provide medical service to the Social Security Administration as an Independent Medical Expert on orthopaedic cases throughout the United States.
For the last 20 years of his life, he enjoyed retirement at Boca West Country Club where he served on the Board of Governors and numerous committees. As a consummate people person he made many wonderful new friends during this time of his life.

In 1981 my husband fell out of a truck and shattered his leg. One Dr. wanted to amputate at the hip, but Dr. Brovender was able to save his leg. At the time I was in the hospital as well. Dr. Brovender not only attended to my husband but came to see me and give me updates every day. I will always be thankful to Dr. Brovender for saving the leg of my then 25 year old husband.
