Arthur David Ahern Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2025.
Arthur Ahern, affectionately known as "Big Art" to his friends and simply Dad or Grandpa, to his family, was a man whose presence was as grand as his nickname. Born in Campbellton, NB, to Philip Charles Ahern and Constance Mary (Cluffe) Ahern. Arthur embarked on a journey of 87 remarkable years, culminating in a legacy of love, friendship, and unwavering devotion to his family. On January 26, 2025, Arthur passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital, his big heart finally succumbing to the immense love it held within.

Growing up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Arthur was the 4th of 5 brothers, who were all large in stature. Big Art attended many different schools due to his mischievous character and his dislike for authority. He didn't let anyone push him around in a time where you were expected to toe the line. After attending multiple Universities, he graduated from Sir George Williams University, with a wealth of knowledge that would lay the foundation for his successful career as a commodity broker. His legendary personality was a perfect fit for his profession. If you looked in the dictionary under 80's commodity broker - you'd see a picture of Arthur. A big suitcase cell phone, sitting at the bar holding court. His professional life was marked by determination and rolling the dice, but it was his personal life that truly defined him.

Arthur's heart belonged to his beloved wife, Carol, with whom he shared a love that many spend lifetimes searching for. To his final day he was focused on one thing, his wife. Together, they crafted a family tapestry woven with the threads of affection and support. Katrina (Walter) and Chris (Niki), were Arthur's pride and joy. He loved them and stood steadfastly by their sides, a testament to his unconditional love. The arrival of his grandchildren- Harlen, Talia, Isabella, Olivia, and Sophia - ushered in a new chapter of devotion, as he embraced the role of a doting grandfather, celebrating their achievements with the enthusiasm of a man whose heart knew no bounds. Big Art, could rarely be missed on the sidelines, but if you couldn't see him, you could always hear him, "cheering" for his family, "Nicely Done!"

Throughout his life, Arthur often spoke about his four brothers, Philip (deceased), Brian, Kevin (deceased), & Sean, their wives and many nieces and nephews. He took immense pride in being part of the Ahern clan. His, larger than life character, was matched only by the size of his heart. Many of his extended family or his kid's friends found a place in his life, each one touched by his loving, friendly, and thoughtful nature. Arthur was a protector, a sanctuary for those in need, and his home was often a refuge for anyone seeking help. His capacity for love was matched by his nonjudgmental and welcoming spirit, making everyone in his company feel valued and respected.

In remembering Big Art, we recall a man whose influence was as profound as his laughter. Big Art will be remembered by the many stories Legends are made of. Arthur's legacy is not one of sorrow, but a celebration of a life lived with boundless love and an open heart.

Please remember Arthur for the qualities he so effortlessly displayed-love, friendship, character, loyalty and thoughtfulness-and let the impact of his life continue to ripple through the world in acts of kindness and compassion. Arthur Ahern's journey may have reached its sunset, but the warmth of his spirit will forever illuminate the hearts of those who loved him.

Dear Carol, Katrina, Chris and Family,

Our deep condolences. Art was an amazing person. He was very special in our family's life. Art was a wonderful soccer coach to Gillian and a caring friend to our family and to Gillian. Art's love for life and people commanded the rooms he entered, spreading warmth and love.

With Much Love,

As Uncle Art to me, he shared so much kindness, warmth and an open door policy while I was in my 20s living in Vancouver for a brief few years. I am forever grateful for that time spent during that pivotal period of life with both Art and Carol. I will be attending his funeral from London, UK

Bob ( Carol's cousin) and I met Art and Carol in Montreal in 1968.
We reconnected after our move to Vancouver Island 20 years ago. Getting together with Art and Carol was always a great time. Art was a big presence in our lives with his stories and his big laugh.
I will miss him dearly. Jeannette Willis ( Bob deceased January 2024)

I first met Arthur approx. 45 years ago. He lived a block over in the neighborhood. One day while walking to the bus for work, Athur stopped and picked me up as he found out we worked close by downtown. After that he looked for me everyday. We had many spirited discussions about Politic,s, the Stock Market etc. When we both retired we joined "The Old Boy's golf group until covid. Neither of us were good golfers but we enjoyed the comradery and time with the group. The score was irrelevant. His input, humor and sarcasm was enjoyed by all. We lost touch during covid for which I am sad. He was a good friend who will be missed. Our condolences to the Ahern family.
