DARTMOUTH - Arthur DeMello, 87, of Dartmouth, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was born in New Bedford, the son of Manuel and Angelina DeMello.

Arthur lived in Dartmouth most of his life. He served in WWII with Company B 344th Engineer Service Regiment and participated in military campaigns in Italy, Southern France and Germany.

After his military service, Arthur worked at Bettencourt Furniture, Rezendes Furniture and as a real estate broker for several years before working for University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He was also the chairman of the Dartmouth Housing Authority for several years.

Arthur has been a member of St. Mary's Church in Dartmouth for more than 50 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren, taking care of his home and enjoying coffee frappes.

He leaves his loving wife of 52 years, Elvira DeMello; two sons, Arthur Jr. and Wayne; and four grandchildren, Nathan, Chloe, Carly, and Colin.

Arthur will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 8am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, followed by his funeral Mass at 9am in St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Visiting hours Friday 5-8pm. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, New Bedford.
