Arthur Jukes Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jun. 27 to Jul. 2, 2009.

JUKES Arthur Hamilton July 6th, 1922 - June 20th, 2009 Born in Newcastle on Tyne, England, son of Hamilton Dawson and Dilys Rees Jukes. Dad's family moved to Peru and Columbia in the late 1920's and then settled in Victoria B.C. in the mid 1930's. Dad excelled in a variety of sports including track & field, soccer, rugby and golf. He enlisted with the Canadian Scottish Regiment in 1937 at the age of 15, and served with distinction with the regiment until his release from the Canadian Army as a Major in 1947. When Dad returned from overseas, he began working for the T. Eaton Company in 1949 and worked with them continuously and successfully until his retirement in 1985. Loving and devoted father and husband, Dad married Margaret Gravlin in 1943 and enjoyed 53 years of a happy marriage and four children. In 1999, the family welcomed Marion Lang to the Jukes family. We are grateful for the friendship, love and happiness that they enjoyed during their 10 years of marriage. Dad is survived by his extended family, including his sister Yvonne Jukes, wife Marion, four children: Ann Gillard, Cathy and husband Grant Smith, Ian, and John Jukes, six grandsons: Keith Gillard and wife Balbir, Brent Gillard and wife Tricia, Kyler Jukes and wife Natalee, Kolby Jukes and wife Ashley, Sean and Connor Smith and 3 great-granddaughters Laney, Torin and Maia Gillard, as well as Marion's family, Guy, Marian, Trevor and Diana Impey. The family would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff of 2 East at Lion's Gate Hospital for the care, comfort and unconditional love they provided to Dad and his family and friends during his time in the hospital. A memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon, July 4th. You can phone 604-980-7934 or email [email protected] for service details. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the West Vancouver S.P.C.A. While we are all very, very sad to see you go, we are happy that you have been set free. You will be loved and missed forever. It was a life lived to the fullest with integrity and no regrets. We love you Dad!

Dearest Cathy&Grant, Sean and Connor,

I am deeply saddened by the news of Arthur's passing.

Please accept our deepest condolences to all of you and the rest of the family.

It hurts so much to have your love one taken from his earthly journey, but he will be in a better place. The memories of shared laughters, and the love he gave to each of us will endure forever and will always be in our hearts.

Cath, you know how much I loved your dad, though I may not have kept in close touch, but he and your mom are so very close to my heart.

take care always,

Rowena and family.
