Arthur Lien Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jul. 26 to Jul. 27, 2013.
Art passed away peacefully with his wife of 41 years by his side. Born in New Westminster to Guldburg and Aashild in 1937, Art is survived by his wife Theresa and his children: Cary, Nicole, and Steven. Art started working as a teenager with his father on his commercial fishing boat. Art started his practice in 1964 and will be remembered for his dedication to dentistry and to his patients. Art belonged to the Gold Foil Study club, Crown and Bridge club, where he had many close friends that shared his love of learning new technics and refining their skills to the highest level. Art had a real enthusiasm for life: his days fishing with friends, golfing with his wife and friends, made for some great stories, laughs and wonderful memories for everyone involved. Whether you were one of his many friends or patients, Art always found time and made himself available for you. He will be greatly missed. Our family would like to thank Dr. Savage and the nursing staff at Vancouver Cancer Agency for all their help. Art has requested a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Society in Art's memory would be greatly appreciated.

The best friend anyone could ever have. He was humerous. He was optimistic and one of the most skilled dentist you could ever meet. We met through the National Dental Examining Board. He loved his wife and family. He brought sunlight into life if his friends and patients. I miss him very much.

I knew Art around the time he began his practice and when he had few patients. I was one. I knew that he would succeed considering his skill and personality which was very congenial and intelligent. It was I who swapped with him a long neck Bacon 5-string Banjo for playing folk music, of which he was very fond. I had a small music store in New Westminister, and we became good acquaintances. I eventually left the country and now, having returned and wanting to make contact with him, I am appalled and sorrowful to find that he has passed on. He was a very fine man and I am deeply sympathetic to his family. May he Rest in the most Profound Peace.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Lien's passing. He was such a kind and wonderful man, and a friend to my family. He was gentle and compassionate every time we were in the office. My children actually were excited to go to the dentist and my son will never forget the time he gave him $5 for a milkshake after doing so well getting his first filling. I am 33 years old and in my file Dr. Lien kept a drawing I made for him when I was five. My deepest condolences to Dr. Lien's family. We will miss him very much.

Dr. Lien was my dentist since I was child and was always so kind and thoughtful about the comfort of his patients. I was sad to know that he was retiring but infinitely sadder to hear of his passing. He was a man who made a difference to many people and I hope that his family will be comforted to remember how much he was appreciated by his patients and how much he will always be missed. He was a true gentleman and it was an honour to know him.

Art was a very popular dentist and collegue in the Princess Medical Building where he practiced and made many friends. I had the honor of knowing hin since 1970 during my days working for Drs. B and J. Lodge. Many good times were enjoyed through the Gold Foil Study Club and hitching a ride with him on occasion to attend other dental functions. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing and my thoughts are with his friends and family.

My heartfelt condolences to your family - I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Lien's passing. My father was a long-time, friend, colleague, and patient of Art's - and I had was honoured to see him again just last year at my own father's memorial. My dad belonged to some of Art's study clubs, they golfed together, and had played squash together at the "Y" back in the 60's and early 70's. I remember being a "guineau pig" for the two of them for something new they had been studying! As a collegue, my dad always held the highest regard for Art as both a dentist and a friend, referring his own patients to him when he knew they were moving to New Westminster or Burnaby. He was one of the "great" ones and he will be sorely missed by his former patients, his friends, and his family. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Leslie (daughter of Dr. Rod MacDonald).

He was an excellent, gentle, caring dentist to all of us and a lovely, happy, kind man. We will miss him. Our sincere sympathy to the family.

Very terrible news. My daughters were patients of Art's for years. Such a nice man. I always recall the 'apres appointment' with Art and I talking about mutual friends in the lacrosse world. My family and my thoughts are with you.

my most sincere condolences..I have known Art since 1967 as I worked for Mike Tonks for seven years. As I introduce guest speakers at hue Pacific Dental Conference, Pit Paths would cross. Recently I was at Rod MacDobalds memorial service and Art was very sad to say goodbye to his good friend, He had a marvellous disposition which is rare for a dentist. He always had a smile on his face and loved to share. he was loved by all his patients, but most of all he was a rare and incredible human being. I fell blessed to have known him and will miss him.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Art was a joyful, kind, caring person and a wonderful dentist. I was deeply touched that he took the time to write such a lovely note of sympathy when my father passed 6 years ago as we were both patients of Art's. He was a rare gem. My deepest sympathies to you.

In the 40+ years Art was my dentist I never once went for an "appointment." I always went for a "visit" during which he would work on my teeth. When times where tight for us Art would stretch the payments something I rarely hear today. Over the years our kids added to the practice , then extended family and so on.
Sharon and I will miss Art immensely....after Art was born God broke the mold...thank goodness we had the years to call him "friend."
Please accept our sincerest condolences.

Art took care of mine and my wife Donna,s teeth for 40 plus years and it was a pleasure to go to our Dental appointments. He was such an up beat guy who had a smile that would light up a room. We are going to miss him.Our condolenses to his family. They don't make them any nicer than Art. Arne & Donna Evans

Art was my dentist almost from the start of his practice. I will always remember Art with fond memories of my dental visits. Both of us being of Norwegian heritage, we always had much to catch up on. Our fathers both had common friends that we spent many times laughing about. I will miss him greatly. My dental checkups were as much about visiting an old fiend as they were about my teeth. Rest in Peace Art.

Theresa and family, so sad to hear of Art's passing. I have wonderful memories of hiking, skiing and fishing with him. Furthermore, every Dentist I've visited since moving to the Sunshine Coast, has marveled at the excellent work Art did on my gold crowns. Once again, very sorry to hear of your loss.
