ARTHUR MAAHS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2016.
Maahs, Arthur G.

Arthur G. Maahs, 96, a life-long Anaheim resident, passed peacefully in the late night of August 19, 2016. Art was born in a house his father built on Diamond Street on March 21, 1920 to Fred and Charlott Maahs. He graduated from Anaheim High School in 1938. Art married the love of his life, Lorraine Maahs, in 1942. Together they raised three children Brad, Carol and Roger in Anaheim. Art and Lorraine were married 73 years before her passing in 2015. Art served in the US Navy, on the USS Buchanan, during World War II. The majority of Art's time in the Navy was spent in the Pacific. From his post on the crow's nest in Tokyo Bay, Art witnessed the Japanese surrender ceremony on the morning of Sunday, September 2, 1945. Shortly after his return from overseas, Art went to work for the Pacific Telephone Company. He worked as a technician and lineman throughout Orange County until plans were made for what was to be Disneyland. He installed phone lines for the construction trailers and remained at Disneyland until his retirement from the phone company in 1978. Art had a love for hunting and fishing, motorcycles, boats, gardening, animals, Las Vegas, the Mohave Desert, and the Sierra Mountains. Together with members of the First Baptist Church of Anaheim, Art and Lorraine traveled throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, Egypt, and the Holy Land. Art had such a wise, kind, gentle and loving way about him. He was cherished and admired by his family, as well as countless friends. Art was an incredible father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Preceding Art in death was his beloved wife Lorraine and son Roger, his sister Evelyn and brother Otto. He is survived by his two children Brad Maahs and Carol Hernandez; grandchildren Kevin Hernandez, Michelle Maahs, Rebecca Allen and Kristen Maahs, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services for Art will be held at Hilgenfeld Mortuary, 120 E. Broadway, Anaheim, 92805. Visitation will be available from 4 - 8 PM on Sunday, August 28th and a memorial service held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 29th.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made, in Arthur's honor, to the Anaheim Historical Society, PO Box 927 Anaheim, CA 92815.

I remember Art as a gentle soul, going back to my very young days. Lorraine was cousin to my mother, Joann, and I remember visiting their home many times when I was a child. I like to think of him and Lorraine catching up after a brief separation. May their love flourish in eternity!
