Goodbye good friend.
May 5, 2016
I was just poring over my 1953 Saint Anselm's College yearbook, spotted my old classmate, Arky, and did a google search, finding out a few minutes ago that he had passed almost 2 months ago. Sad, sad ... yet our faith shows us how to grieve and really focus on the many, many fond memories that are flooding through me right now. I think that an apt description of Arky is that he was a sweet man in his youth (when we knew one another) and continued to develop in that nature .... certainly affirmed by the tributes here.
We corresponded a few short years ago, probably about a forthcoming SAC reunion. My being just outside of San Francisco didn't bode well for such a journey.
Arky, as our lives unfolded, life didn't allow us to continue as the young friends we were but most assuredly you've left an everlasting imprint in my memory and heart.
God bless you and your family.

To the Cummings family,
Our hearts were broken upon learning of "Arky's" passing. After many years of friendship with "Barbara and Arky," especially the time when they were Grandma and Aunt Eleanor Howard's next-door neighbors, Arky took it upon himself to be Mom's welcoming committee at The Arbor's. We know that Mom's happiness back in Winthrop is in large part due to Arky's daily greetings.
We pray that you will find peace and comfort in your wonderful memories ... and in knowing how proud he and your Mom always were of each one of you.
Rest in peace now, dear friend. I will certainly miss your hugs and wonderful spirit. Your family will be in my prayers with love, Diane Cleary
(Sincere condolences on behalf of Marge Cleary)

My first experience with Mr Cummings was as a Junior High math teacher. Under his guidance I was able to do the math.
I remember meeting him again at the 50th class reunion at the Cottage Park Yacht Club.

There are so many children, now parents and even grandparents themselves, who owe their sense of fairness, their ambition, and their self-esteem to the teachings and leadership of "Arky". Your family should feel nothing but pride once the devastating sorrow passes. This community will miss him very much.

My recollection is that "Arky" arrived a WJHS my last year there. In that year he was my Algebra teacher. I recall him as a good teacher and a decent man. I never got to know him as well as did my sister Emile and my brother Bob. During my infrequent meetings with "Arky", over the years, he always mentioned that he recalled me being his student (one never knows if that is good or bad) and was a pleasure to be with. From the outpouring of sadness and appreciation I have seen these few days it is clear that he was much more than just another teacher.

Our deepest sympathy to the Cummings Family from the Class of 1960. Mr Cummings was our class advisor and we were thrilled to have him with us last September at our 55th Reunion. He thrilled us with his poem that he had written about our class and it was one of the highlights of our reunion. He has touched us all and will sorely be missed. May his memory be a blessing to all.

I will always remember Arky as the kind teacher who tutored me after school, when I was out sick for a lengthy time. He was super, and to this day I use what I learned in algebra class. I will miss seeing him at our reunions. I send my condolences to his wonderful family.
