Asti Milkovic Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2011.
Asti Milkovic July 16, 1952 - March 07, 2011, was a long-time resident of Dallas and Plano, TX. In May 2008, Asti was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 breast cancer, but courageously emerged as a survivor in 2009. Unfortunately, in late 2010 she began exhibiting several worrisome symptoms resulting in her swift, yet brave, battle with liver cancer and she died peacefully at the Medical Center of Plano, surrounded by her immediate family. Asti was born in Lubljana, Slovenia and was raised in Lubljana until the age of five when her family moved to Zug, Switzerland. At the age of sixteen, she moved to the United States from Europe, with her father Miran and her step-mother Angelika. Although she had learned some English in school back in Switzerland, she would fondly recall really learning English from regularly watching I Love Lucy episodes. Asti attended both the University of Syracuse and the University of Illinois where she obtained a BA in Photography. At 19 years old, Asti became an older sister to her brother, Thomas Aaron Milkovic. Thom was born to her father, Miran, during his second marriage to Angelika Bloch. Over the following years she made her way from New York to Chicago to Texas, eventually settling in Dallas with her husband Arnold, with whom she had her beloved daughter, Lily, in 1979 at the age of 27. She was married to Arnold "Arnie" Jakal for 39 years. Asti was a loving wife, a devoted mother, artist, and avid tennis player, who spoke five languages and lived a vibrant life full of travel, laughter, and curiosity. Asti will be honored and remembered by her loving family, and is survived by her daughter Lily Milkovic-Jakal and her fiance Serge Esteve, her husband Arnold "Arnie" Jakal, in addition to her mother Sonja Basaj, her father, Miran Milkovic and his wife Angelika Bloch, her brother Thomas Aaron Milkovic and his wife Jamarie Milkovic and Thomas' daughter Ashley Milkovic, along with countless friends and family all of whom were blessed to know her. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, March 13th, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 8011 Frankford Rd, Dallas, TX 75252, 972-407-6070. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the cost of Asti's memorial services by check or by credit card using the following link: http://bit.ly/AstiMilkovicFuneral

My sincere condolances on the loss of Asti. She was an inteligent and pleasant person to be around and work with. Her tasteful work on my website still gets compliments, though her name was accidently removed by someone updating it, next time I have some updates it will be replaced.

Lily & Arnie,
I have not known Asti for long, but I know that our tennis matches will never quite be the same without Asti's laughing and wicked forehands! Her competitiveness was matched only by her generosity of spirit. She was special to many people and my heart goes out to you and your family.

Everyone I know who really knew Asti will miss her greatly. I will be among those who miss her the most. The last thing I said to her was, "I want you to know how much I love you. You are the best friend I ever had." I didn't realize how true it was until after I said it.
Someone I follow online says at the end of our lives we may ask ourselves, "Did I live fully? Did I love openly? And did I make a difference?" To me Asti could answer yes to all 3 questions. Asti made a difference in my life. She lived, loved and laughed passionately. Even though she lived a short life, we had 80 years worth of talks, laughs and fun. I have added a picture of us celebrating birthdays with friends. Asti displays her creative, fun spirit in the picture where she placed our picture in the frames on the wall behind us.

I will so much miss talking and emailing Asti. She was originally a friend of my husband, Rodney, and I became a fast friend because Asti was so wonderful to talk with. She would call me on the weekends, and we would only end the conversations when her cell phone battery went dead. We talked about everything going on in both our lives. She and I forwarded emails all the time, and she especially enjoyed the ones with beautiful photos or cute pets. She and I spent hours discussing our cats, Peaches and Sammy.
When she told me she had breast cancer, I tried to get her the best research information (since I am a medical librarian). I was devastated to hear that she had passed on, and I know she will be welcomed and happy in heaven.
Our sincere sympathies go out to Lily, Arnold and all Asti's friends and family.
