Astrid Cornelia Van Noortwijk Glynn age 71 of Lincoln passed away on Sunday March 28, 2021 at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA. She was the daughter of the late Leo F. Glynn and his wife Adriana W. Glynn. Astrid lived the life and practiced the profession that she loved. She grew up in Weston and graduated from The Winsor School in 1967. She graduated in 1971 from Bennington College, Vt. with a B.A. in European History, having done her thesis on the Nuremberg Trials. She graduated from Albany Law School in 1975. She practiced admiralty law for several years with her father at Glynn & Dempsey in Boston, focusing on activities in the Port of Boston. Through her representation of the Boston Shipping Association during the Big Dig she involved herself in more diverse transportation modes and was pivotal in the creation of the Haul Road. She began her public service in 2002 as Deputy Secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation, followed by Deputy Secretary of Commonwealth Development in 2004. In 2007, she left the Commonwealth to serve as the Commissioner of NYSDOT for the State of New York. Since 2015, she has worked as the Rail and Transit Administrator, MassDot, reporting directly to the Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation. Part of the enjoyment of her vocation was helping younger staff, especially women, to find their way and excel. She balanced the professional life she loved with exotic travel to experience wild animals, ancient civilizations and diverse cultures. Paris, London, Italy, East Africa, Southern Africa, Rwanda, Madagascar, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Myanmar, Borneo, Thailand, the Galapagos and China were among her travels. She took up horseback riding at 60. Her kind heart, sense of humor and intellectual focus will be sorely missed by those at home and abroad. She is survived by her sister Leslie A. Glynn and Leslie's husband James N. Polando of Weston, by Astrid's other sister Laura Christina Van Waalwijk Glynn of Lincoln, by Astrid's cousin Jane K. Donnelly and Jane's husband Christopher M. Stirling, their daughter Casey K. Stirling and son Dr. Kevin C. Stirling, by Astrid's cousin William H. Donnelly and his son Michael J. Donnelly, by Astrid's cousin Thomas P. Glynn and his wife Marylou Batt and their daughters Kate Rogers and Jennifer Glynn, by Astrid's cousin Katharine H. Glynn and her husband Sam Clements, and by Astrid's cousins in The Netherlands. Donations may be made in her honor either to the BayPath Humane Society of Hopkinton (where she found her cat Cinnabar) or to Wildlife SOS (wildlifesos.org) (which rescues captive elephants and bears in Asia). The burial will be a private family service at the Linwood Cemetery in Weston, MA. At a later date - to be announced - there will be a memorial service for family and friends to celebrate her life.

I worked with Astrid and have nothing but fond memories. She was smart, professional and a great co-worker. But she topped it off by being a genuinely warm and kind person. She contributed a lot to the world and will be missed.

I just learned of Astrid's passing. She was a law school friend I lost track of until she became the DOT Commissioner in NYS. It was wonderful to see her again and we got a group of friends together to celebrate her rediscovery. She was the same beautiful, funny, smart, interesting and kind person we had all remembered her to be. So glad we got to see her again, and so sorry for the sad news. My sympathy goes out to her family and friends; I know she was a particularly lovely part of your lives.

Astrid's death is a great loss to Boston Harbor and the new generations of water transportation that are providing links between Boston and other harbor communities, as well as towns on the South Shore, in Massachusetts Bay and up to the North Shore. As one of an all-woman consultant team who worked with Astrid on the Massachusetts Ferry Project in 1997, it was a delight to have as a client someone who actually understood that the Commonwealth's navigable waterways were available rights of way for transit. She delighted in history and the stories and lore of the Harbor. She was fun to work with, and she was very effective. We were so proud of her when she went off to run transportation in New York. I hope that when the ferries are back to full operation in the Boston area and throughout Massachusetts Bay that the Commonwealth might name one of the ferry terminals or landings for Astrid, who did so much to advocate for ferries over the years. Fair winds and following seas, dear Astrid. Thank you for your extraordinary public service. I miss knowing that you are there keeping an eye on things of the waterfront, but hope you'll exercise your good heavenly persuasion.

I was so sorry to read of Astrid’s passing. Astrid was my boss at EOT. She was a wonderful boss and mentor. I admired her intelligence, savvy, and humor. The Glynn family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am saddened to learn about Astrid's death and express my deep condolences to her family and friends. I had a case with Astrid when we were both young lawyers and she was at her father's firm. We were on opposite sides of the case, but nonetheless enjoyed working together and had a warm and friendly relationship that lasted for some years after the case concluded. It was such a pleasure working with Astrid. She was witty and smart and an excellent lawyer and advocate. We were able to do battle on the case but also enjoy each other's company outside the courtroom. Regrettably, we lost touch when she left the practice but I have always remembered our friendship and professional relationship fondly.

I knew Astrid for nearly 40 years and always enjoyed working with her. She was an enjoyable and funny person to be with, exceptionally smart in her work, and unusually well read and diverse in her knowledge. She was a leader, and her impact on both transportation and harbor planning will be a lasting one. My deepest sympathies to her sisters, cousins, and family.
