Attorney Elaine Pourinski Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2024.
Elaine M. Pourinski, a distinguished attorney and dedicated advocate, passed into eternal rest on June 4, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was 69 years old. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on November 20, 1954, Elaine was the cherished daughter of the late Dorothy (Fannon) and Anthony Pourinski.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Elaine went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Western New England School of Law, embarking on a career that would see her champion the rights of the underserved and advocate for justice in various capacities. She served as a public defender for the State of Massachusetts and later established a private practice in Northampton, where she continued to defend and guide those in need.

In her early years, Elaine's commitment to service was exemplified by her tenure in the Peace Corps in Bogota, Colombia, where she oversaw the care of severely malnourished children. Her dedication to her community was unwavering, as evidenced by her legal guardianship work for those unable to care for themselves.

Elaine's love for the natural world shone through her avid birdwatching. She was a respected member of numerous birding associations and contributed her time and expertise to the Hampshire Bird Club as a board member. Her passion for tennis and the great outdoors brought her joy and camaraderie through the many groups she joined in Easthampton, Massachusetts. She loved the ocean and would often visit Plum Island in Newburyport Mass when visiting her sister.

A fervent supporter of human rights, Elaine was an active member of Amnesty International and the National Lawyers Guild. Her life was one of travel, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the ocean. She leaves behind her beloved cat, Darcy, and a legacy of compassion and activism.

Elaine is lovingly remembered by her sister, Gayle Brady and her husband Henry; her nephew, Michael Brady; her niece, Meaghan Zlindra-Short and her husband Clark; her great-niece, Melody Allen; her great-nephew, Rowan Zlindra-Short; her brother, Stephen Pourinski and his wife Frances; and her adored niece and nephew, Andrew and Jenna. She is predeceased by her parents and her niece, Caitlyn Brady.

In accordance with Elaine's wishes, there will be no funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date to honor her memory. Elaine's altruistic spirit led her to donate her body to the UMass Medical School in Worcester for scientific research. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine's name to Safe Passage, an organization close to her heart, at 76 Carlon Drive, Northampton, Massachusetts 01060.

Elaine, it's been a year since you have left this earth and us. You are missed so much especially during the holidays when you would come. The summer is starting and we will miss the whale watches that we went on every summer. I just sucks not having you around. I have thought of you frequently. I hope you're up there with Mom, Dad, Caitlyn and Carol having the best time. Save a seat at the table for me. I love you sister!

I just learned about Elaine´s passing. She was remarkable woman and attorney. We became dear friends when we worked together in Springfield when both of us and David Sullivan accepted legal appointments by the court to defend the poor that needed legal representation.

I loved Elaine and reached for the phone tonight to ask her to take an indigent case in need of legal representation. I Elaine always accepted by indigent referrals. I am deeply saddened and will make a donation as per her wishes.

Elaine was unique person whose emphaty for the poor was unequal. I will keep her memory in my heart forever

Elaine was a member of the Springfield Dragon Rays Team
She was always positive and made you laugh because she was a hoot. She paddled feverishly and supported our team. Talk about friendly, each and every team member enjoyed Elaine. You are missed and loved. "Paddles Up"

My condolences to Elaine´s family, close friends and colleagues. I had the good fortune to have Elaine for a roommate in the cardiac step down unit at MGH in May. I am honored that she and I got to know each other. What an amazing and inspiring woman. We shared a lot of stories and her dry sense of humor will stay with me. She was so modest about her accomplishments. I know she helped many, many people in her life. Her joke looking out the window at construction cranes was that she´d rather be birdwatching and see real cranes. I went back and took her a card when she was in ICU. A wise, life-loving and memorable woman. When I was discharged she said, "Nobody asked ME if Claire could leave."

So very sad to hear of the death of Elaine Pourinski. She was an excellent advocate for those with no voice. No one who knew Elaine failed to learn from her in law or in nature. We shall miss her.

Elaine and I traveled to several Federal Defender conferences together, attended many plays and concerts, and talked every week about everything. I will treasure our friendship and miss you. Elaine had a passion for the arts. I started attending shows at the symphony and other similar venues due to our friendship. Thank you, RIH.

Elaine was a good colleague, able advocate, and always compassionate, kind, and courteous. She had a god sense of humor and it was always obvious that she cared deeply about the individual clients and broad causes she championed. The legal community has lost an important cog in the wheel of justice.

Elaine, it's been 5 weeks since you have left us. I so miss your almost daily phone calls and our discussions on everything from life, politics and your birding travels. I will always remember our yearly whale watching and occasional Foxwoods trips. I think about you daily. I hope you met up with Mom, Dad, Caitlyn and Carol. All of you will always have a piece of my heart. Until we meet again, please save me a seat at the table!

Elaine and I have played tennis for many years. We have partnered in many games and with the help of her incredible serve have beaten many opponents! Over the years I became aware of her advocacy for those less fortunate in her work as an attorney. Her concerns for others was inherent in who she was as a human. I will miss her deeply.

Elaine will be missed by her tennis friends at Bay Road where her fast serve and stinging forehand were weapons on the court. She often brought a corny joke to tell during change overs. Her never give up spirit would help her and her partner to rebound from a score down 0-5 to win the set 7-5. Happy volleys Elaine
