Aubrey W. "Sonny" Wood Jr.

Aubrey W. "Sonny"Wood Jr., 74, of Charlottesville, died on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born February 9, 1937, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Aubrey W. Wood Sr., and Ollie Middleton Wood.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Martin Wood; three brothers, George, Rusty and Sammy Wood; and one sister, Helen Joyce Wood.

Aubrey served in the Virginia National Guard for three years. He worked most of his life for Jim Beck doing Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. He enjoyed working and visiting at the 5th Street Shell Station, and was a fan of the New York Yankees, University of North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He attended Belmont Baptist Church, and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick.

He is survived by his one son, Stephen Wood of Charlottesville; six brothers, Pete Wood of Charlottesville, Randy Wood and his wife, Bernice, of Charlottesville, Ricky Wood of Las Vegas, Nevada, Tommy Ed Wood of Texas, Frankie Wood of Texas, and Mike Wood of Charlottesville; and four sisters, Audrey Shepperd, June Herring, Molly Wood, and Becky Martin and her husband, Donnie, all of Charlottesville.

Survivors also include Jon Lowery, who was like a son to him; and his special friend, Larry Beasley.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 22, 2011, at Belmont Baptist Church, with Mr. Bruce Lowery officiating, followed by interment at Riverview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Sunday, August 21, 2011, at Belmont Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville SPCA, 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Sonny, you will be missed, but never forgotten!!!!! You are now in a much better place. You will now have the best seat in the house to watch all of the Yankee games. Your jokes and all of your wonderful stories will never be forgotten. 5th Street Shell will miss you so much, but we all know you will always be there with us. Sonny Wood was a great man who inspired everyone he met. I am proud to be a friend and neighbor of his. GOD bless his family during this time of need.
May they know that he was respected and admired by all who knew him.

Steve, I know it's hard as I've been there, but the comfort I had was knowing that they are in a far better place than we are. Dad, Uncle Sammy, and Uncle Sonny are together again to laugh, and joke around like they did when they were here with us. Love you! Stay strong.
