Gus and I shared many adventures prospecting in the Nome and Kougarok districts. He was a hard worker, a reliable companion in the bush, and a good friend. Whenever we would set up a camp, he would look around and breathe in the air and tell me, "I think this place is holy." Around the campfire, over reindeer stew, he would tell stories of old Nome, King Island, and of the giant bird that lived in Imuruk Basin. All things are holy, my friend. See you on the other side.

Gus and I had become close friends while working together in Nome. We've had some incredible adventures and have spent many enjoyable hours fishing together. Since that time we've stayed in close contact. We often talked at least once a month and always over Christmas. I've been worried since I've not heard from him this past Christmas. My condolences to Gus' family. As we all know, he was a great man. Gus always had a positive outlook on life and a great sense of humor. I will truly miss him.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
