Barbara Crammer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 1 to May 2, 2023.
Barbara Ann Eldridge Crammer, a kind and empathetic woman of faith, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2023, of natural causes. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on March 19, 1948, to the late Norris Eldridge of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Mary "Hinoi" Eldridge of Hilo, Hawaii. Barbara spent her early years in Howell, New Jersey, and later lived in Hilo, Hawaii.

Barbara graduated as valedictorian from Saint Joseph's High School in Toms River, New Jersey (now Monsignor Donovan), before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology summa cum laude from Monmouth College in West Long Branch, New Jersey. During her time at Monmouth College, she performed in many theatrical productions, including the lead female role in Don Quixote, as well as various operettas with local theater companies at the Jersey Shore.

Barbara's faith was an integral part of her life, and she spiritually influenced many people with her kindness, empathy and guidance. She attended and graduated from several prestigious academic institutions later in life, including Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and The Lutheran Theological Seminaries in Columbia, South Carolina, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she collectively received two master's degrees and a certificate in theological studies.

She was active in church choirs during her lifetime and was particularly proud of her interdisciplinary studies and outreach in Judaism, Islam, Baha'i Faith, Hinduism, and Buddhism. She lived for a year in Hawaii as an associate pastor at a Lutheran Church in Mililani, Oahu, and also served as a hospital chaplain.

Barbara also taught the English language in China for two years and enjoyed arts and crafts, including making stained glass art, creating artisanal, wooden walking staffs, and jewelry. She followed current events and kept up on all matters in science and religion. She was an avid nature enthusiast, especially bird watching and feeding. She was a world traveler at heart and spent time in China, Italy, and Sweden as well as, living in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Maryland.

Barbara was married three times and is predeceased by all three of her husbands: Dennis "Azriel" Gordon, Richard D. Crammer, and Jon Del Russo, as well as her son Rick Crammer and brothers Alan Eldridge and Don Eldridge. She is survived by her son Jeffrey Gordon, daughter Larissa Bilker and spouse Scott Bilker, son Christopher Crammer and spouse Jessie Schneider, daughter Jennafer Mikkonen and spouse Henry Mikkonen, stepson Damien Del Russo and spouse Yin Del Russo, as well as grandchildren Brandon Bilker, Grant Bilker, and Brooke Bilker. Her surviving siblings are Norris "Buddy" Eldridge, Richard Eldridge, Eugene Eldridge, Jerry Eldridge, Ed Eldridge, Ann Kinney, dozens of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and scores of dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at Village Lutheran Church, 701 Western Blvd, Lanoka Harbor, NJ 08734, on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 1:00 PM. Barbara has often said, "When it's your time, it's your time," and "I believe death is another phase of life. I do not fear it." Her memory shall be treasured by all who knew her.

One of God's finest! Beautiful inside and out! So proud of her family and all she accomplished during her lifetime! Her stories were rich with detail and made you feel like you were there! I will remember your kindness Barbara! I will cherish how helpful you were to me when I had my son Norris Eldridge ~ you dashed right up to our home and made sure I had everything I needed. Of course we both agreed and giggled when you pick up my little son for the very first time and stated "oh Beth ~ he's perfect!!" I knew coming from you ~ it was the real Truth! Love you always Barbara ~ and to her beautiful family my sincere condolences. May she rest in heavenly peace. Love and prayers to all of you.

Barbara's authentic presence was a gift to our family. She spent countless hours reading with my daughters over Skype during the pandemic. She introduced them to classic books, enriched their understanding of the text, expanded their language skills, and shared her faith and life stories with them. Spending time with Barbara was exactly like reading a very good book, we never wanted it to end.
Barbara was also part of our incredible small group Bible study where we talked about life and the Bible, laughed, shared the best food, grew in faith, and prayed for one another.
With much love and our deepest appreciation for the time we had with her!

I met Barbara when over Larissa & Scott's house about seven years ago when she was visiting them. She was full of stories and low key sarcasm and laughed easily. She was very sweet and doting on my daughter and it was fun to see her on her various visits over the years and more recently when she moved to NJ. She would bring a tablecloth to a picnic lunch at the beach and her walking sticks always reminded me of Steve Tyler's microphones in his Aerosmith music videos in the best way possible. I'll miss her quips and stories and randomly seeing her when hanging out with Riss. <3

I remember taking Barbara grocery shopping and singing with her in Choir. She also prayed over one of my kittens when he was not doing well and we didn't know if he would make it. He is now a healthy big boy! Thank you Barbara for all the great memories that you have given to us.

We have had the privilege of knowing and worshipping with Barbara for the past year at Village Lutheran Church in the Senior Choir. She immediately shared her deep faith and friendly compassion with everyone in our Congregation and sang with a beautiful blessed assurance that witnessed God´s intimate relationship with her. This sudden departure to her eternal home has shocked and saddened us when at the same
time, we are celebrating her God glorifying life and looking forward to reuniting with her & all the Saints through Christ our Lord on the Day He has appointed for us.
Thank you, Jesus, for bringing Barbara in our lives.., even if it was just for a whisper of time. Eternity is right around the corner.

What a treasured friend and mentor in the faith Barbara has been these last 4 years. I will miss her deeply and listen for her voice in my mind and heart. Our little MN -based, by phone prayer group will continue to pray for the things she cared about and rejoice in the things in which she rejoices. Including you, her beloved family. Sending my deepest condolences.

Barbara was a wonderful and strong woman, a true and devoted friend and a force for good in the world. She was a Child of God who inspired others through her compassion, intellect, humor and empathy. My life and the lives of her many friends around the world were made richer (and more fun!) by having known and loved Barbara. My family sends much love and sympathy to her beloved family.
