Barbara Duncan Obituary

Published by The New Orleans Advocate from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, 2018.
Barbara Bertucci Duncan passed away peacefully on October 27, 2018 at the age of 84. Affectionately known by everyone as "Barb," she was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and Metairie, Louisiana. Loving daughter of the late Arthur Andrew Bertucci, Sr. and the late Clara DesForges Bertucci; beloved wife of Warren J. "Sonny" Duncan for 65 years. She is survived by Sonny and her four loving children, Warren Duncan, Jr. (Phyllis), Pamela Duncan Maltzahn (Eddie), Lisa Duncan Lindsey (Mike), and Mark Duncan (Sadhana). Barb was a spirited grandmother in every sense to her twelve grandchildren: Jason Duncan (Leah), Joshua Duncan, Justin Duncan (Brandi), Jayne Duncan, Jennifer Maltzahn Mahoney (Patrick), Rachael Maltzahn, Eddie Maltzahn, Jr. (Stephanie), Jeremy Maltzahn (Jennifer), Aimee Lindsey, Medha Duncan, Frances Duncan and Chester Duncan. She was also blessed with eighteen great-grandchildren. Barb is also survived by her loving siblings, Arthur Bertucci, Jr., Judy Ulm and Mary Ann Muscarello, Sue Lacour, Robert Bertucci and Ronnie Bertucci, along with several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Barb was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Benilde Parish, and volunteered in several capacities at both St. Benilde and St. Christopher schools for many years. She was also a patriot, and looked upon her service at eight years old, folding bandages for wounded soldiers of World War II, as her contribution on the home front to the war effort. This was a lifelong source of pride, as were her many years as a master long jump official for the local high school track meets and the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials. The essence of her life, however, was her devotion to her family, including her tireless support of her children, grandchildren and great-children in all of their pursuits, sporting events and other endeavors. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs at Beau Maison Assisted Living and Passages Hospice for the special care and attention provided to Barb over the final months of her life. Relatives and friends are invited to attend services on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, 1230 S. Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans. Visitation begins at 9:30 A.M. Words of Remembrance will begin at 10:30 A.M., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, 5454 Ponchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans.

Barbara Duncan was my mother-in-law for 43 years. But more than that, she was my friend. We had our differences from time to time. Some big, some small, but in the end, we always did for each other.
I am grateful that the Lord gave her son, Warren, and I a heart to take care of her the last year of her life. It wasn't an easy task but He gave us the ability to do what we could for her. She will be greatly missed but I look forward to the day when I see her again in the presence of my Heavenly Father and my savior JESUS CHRIST.

Prayers & Love to your family in memory of one of the most beautiful person I have ever met in my whole. Her door was always open to knock on & just come in & visit. Barb was like a second Mother to me with her heart & arms always open to me. With a real heavy heart I along with everyone else will say goodbye. All my love to everyone in the family. She was a gift from God & I will miss her so much. God Bless You'll

Oh my goodness! How Heaven is now more enriched by the beauty of Barbara being there. Barbara and I were next door neighbors and friends when we were children together on Oak Street. How kind she was after so many years to remember my sister Marilyn and I and invite us to her and Sonny's 50th wedding anniversary. It was such a happy memory. I will be sure to be in that number at her Mass to remember Barbara and ask Her to pray for me as I will for her.
Please accept my deepest sympathy .
